Post 1.8 vvc 160bhp exhaust manifold.
Does anyone know if the exhaust manifold is standard MGF and is it the 4 or 6 stud fitting?
On a more positive note, I fitted the new left hand engine mount only to discover that the one that has been repaired isn't the cause of the noise. So, there is a free to a good home ( plus p+p) used but in a good condition and probably not the sourse of extra noise, left hand engine mount going for anyone that needs it.

I think (but not absolutely sure) that earlier engines, mems 2.0, are 4 bolt manifold and later ones, mems 3.0, have the 6 bolt. Not sure if all 160's are mems 3.0? if so then most likely 6 bolt. The fixing to the head studs is the same on both though so if you have a 4 bolt manifold/system you should be able to fit that to a 160 head but not sure if some of the extra horses came from a better shaped manifold. Mine came to me with a mems 3.0 1.6 with a 6 bolt manifold and that same manifold is currently working fine on a mems 2.0 143 VVC. Hope that makes sense!

So, what was the noise coming from?

Thanks Sanz. That does make sense. The main thing is that it is MGF and not a GTM part.
I think the noise was/is a combination of the split manifold and the rear clam had moved on it's axis, so was sitting a little strange. The clam has now been repositioned, next comes the manifold.
It's all go with kit cars, isn't it.....

Well good news and bad news. Just got the car back from the local garage. The mechanic seems certain the new mount is the cause of the problem. Too stiff but might soften up with use. The exhaust is fine apart from a gasket incorrectly fitted and restricting air flow. Does seem faster now. So it's mod time, something I can do to quiet the mount, maybe mount it on a rubber strip between mount and engine cradle. Or maybe go back to the old one with a few holes drilled into it.
At least the mechamic gave the engine/ gearbox the thumbs up.

How was the gasket "incorrectly fitted" and which one?

Not quite sure Sidewinder, as I didn't see it myself. He said it was on the last bit of pipe as it enters the silencer. I assume it was where the exhaust is clamped to the brackets. I don't see how it could block much even if it was badly fitted but I trust the guy and there is a definite improvement higher up the rev range.
