Post AP Brake Pads
Hello all, cautionary tale more than anything...

Took my Libra for an MOT at the weekend, didn't expect any real issues.

Tester noticed that the front near side wheel would rotate happily forward but bind when rotated backwards. Upon closer inspection it became apparent that the friction material had separated from the backplate on the outboard pad on that caliper...as the wheel was turned backwards the friction material moved out of position & jammed in the caliper...

Not good! Got some pads & then enjoyed the fun that is electrolytic corrosion...steel pad pins in aluminium calipers - genius!

I'll post a pic - the other pads had begun to delaminate too so it was well overdue. The pads were well less than half worn but I'd guess that they've been in there for the majority of the life of the car - guess that is one if the downsides of a lightweight car with big brakes - they don't wear out all that quickly!

Cheers, Stew.

I made up stainless pins for my APs from 6mm rod. Also used plenty o slip in the holes they go through.

Good catch by the mot tester.

Steel pins and alloy caliper are not just for fast kit cars, my citroen c5 has the same on the back and with little use they can become de laminated. as the handbrake operates on the front so gets very little use.
