Post K3 headlights question
Hi,
Can anybody help me with this query?
When I put the headlights on full beam the front fog lights come on as well.
This is fine from a practical driving point of view - but will it be OK with the MOT tester?
Happy Christmas!!
Thanks,
John

Nope - and sort it sooner rather than later as it's an offence to have your fog-lights on except in fog or falling rain. Most Police would simply tell you to turn them off unless you'd done something else silly but if you then tell them that you can't turn them off the conversation could rapidly go downhill.

Of course if they aren't fog-lights and simply auxiliary marker lights then it's OK but they would have to be fitted with just 5W bulbs - if that's an easy swap then it could be a quick way of getting legal again if you can't find the bottom of the problem.

From an electrical point of view - I'd always start by looking at earths when lights start interfering with each-other.

Agreed, but:

That doesn't sound like fog lights to me, that's a fairly normal, and totally legal wiring for auxillary lights or spotlights if you prefer.
Just because they're not clear pencil beam spots doesn't mean they're legally 'fog' lights, they could easily be driving lights.

I would have thought as long as they go off when you dip the lights you'd be OK, although I agree they 'should' have a seperate switch I don't think it's a legal requirement.

Mine do the same - no comments / complaints from the MOT testers.

Hi,
full beam

DOH!!!!

Hadn't read that bit. Yep you'll get away with them as driving lights then no matter what they are actually intended to be. Generally the difference between them is that fogs have a shield in front of the bulb so that the only light cast forwards is light that's been reflected by the rear of the light body. Driving lghts or spots don't have a shield so the light cast forwards is the reflected stuff as well as light directly from the bulb - the difference between a driving light and spot is the focus imparted by the lense and reflector (a driving light will cast a fairly wide beam whereas a spot will cast a very directed pencil beam).
