Post MEMS3 Loom - Fan control wire?
So after some helpful advice from another member (libra_123), I have found out that the trigger wire for the radiator cooling fan should be located on the small black ECU plug on the GTM MEMS3 aux loom.

Libra_123's loom has a white/yellow wire coming from that plug marked as the fan control - my loom doesn't have this spare wire sitting there waiting to be connected. I investigated further and stripped back some of the tape near the plug and I have 11 redundant wires connected to the plug but doing nothing (see picture)

Does anyone know what wire I should be using as the fan trigger? As I haven't got a white/yellow wire as Libra_123's loom I am presuming that colours may have changed at different times when GTM supplied the loom?

I expect the only fail safe way to identify the correct pin/wire is to get hold of a diagram showing the pin positions and what they control - does anyone have such a diagram they could send me?

Thanks in advance.

Cheers, Jamie.

hi Jamie

I am fitting a mems3 engine to my k3 I got a complete wiring loom from a mgf and on my one the wire is coloured (us) BLUE SLATE (grey)
this goes to a the relay ( relay-cooling-fan )
then the output is coloured (up) BLUE PURPLE and this supply's the cooling fan ( motor-cooling-fan )

hope this helps

Thanks Paul. I'll have a study of that later.

Perhaps it depends on which car the plug /loom came out of too,

I remembered I have a Haynes manual for Rover 25/ MG ZR in which it states the vehicle uses MEMS 3.
It has a circuit diagram for the engine cooling fan stating that the wire from ECU to Fan relay is S/U, Slate with Blue Tracer, so opposite from above, the wire from relay to Fan is just Blue.

Looks like you do have a Slate/Blue wire in that loom though, unfortunately the manual doesn't have the other wires from that plug which would be handy for the process of elimination.

Cheers,
Mike

BTW its Libra_134 not 123... haha, My Libra Tub was no 134 to be made (sold?) (last 3 digits of VIN) :D

Mike - sorry for the name balls up

The black plug on my MEMS 3 loom is actually branded as a VW/Audi part????? I do have the slate/blue wire as you say but I think the plug / pin diagram will be the only way to tell for sure.

We have a specialist auto electrical workshop in my village so I might pay them a visit and see if they would be able to tell me which wire it is - worth a shot.

Hi,
The description from the Rave CD.

Cooling Fan
If the engine coolant rises to 102'c the ECM (C0159) switches the coil of the cooling fan-1 relay via a US (Blue Slate) wire.
The energised cooling fan relay (C0019) supplies power by a B (Black) wire connected to an earth header (C0017) and operates to boost the airflow through the radiator.
When the engine coolant temperature falls below 96'c, the ECM disconnects the earth of the cooling fan relay and the cooling fan motor is switched off.

The connecter diagrams do have the pin numbers on them but as C0159 has so many pins you can't make the number out.
The 2 corners are pin 53 Blue Black (If AC fitted) & Pin 80 Purple Brown.
Hope that helps
Cheers
Juls

Thanks Juls, I'll have a look again at the weekend and see if I can work it out. I certainly have an unused grey/blue wire looking at the photo.

I found the attached Mems3 pin diagram online which fits with Juls' description of the small plug starting at 53 and ending in 80 so I hope its accurate. From your post on my other thread Juls it seems I'm looking for pin 67 and it should be a slate/blue colour - I'll have a look at the weekend to check. Hopefully this is the wire I need!

Is the fact that my small ecu plug is marked as a VW/audi part, mean its likely that the wire is another colour from the rover diagram? Is this perhaps a a standard ecu plug fitment and some GTM ones are std VW/audi items? I don't suppose it mattered when GTM supplied the loom as they have joined the wiring up where needed and away you go......they didn't consider the idiot trying to find the fan control wire at a later date

These temperatures seem a bit high to me, especially if your going to do a few track days, remember the Libra / Spider is rear engined unlike the MG ZR / ZS.
I would contemplate a controllable fan system with additional manual option.

Jamie.

Hi Jamie,
I've checked I didn't do a typo, but it was out of the MGF section.
Must admit though I have no idea if they are high or not
