different rear arms/hub locking
Hi , i picked up another coupe , was looking over it and on the rear it has the mini type bottom arms (adjustable) with ball joint but the top is set up with two bars going to the hub and where the top ball joint was(the bars are fitted to another bar that fits where the top arm goes in the subframe),locking the hub, this means no locking bar etc for the steering , will take a photo tomorrow it would be interesting to get an opinion as to whether it will be as effective as other methods .

Re: different rear arms/hub locking
If done right it has potential of being a good system with no.minimal bump steer.
Get a pic up, I take it, it is on Coil overs due to this.

Re: different rear arms/hub locking
Mine locks the lower part of the hub. Its fully adjustable, Toe in and out, camber and caster as it picks up the tie bar as well. these are old and not great pictures I know but hope it gives you all an idea what I'm on about..... This is looking down the drive shaft at the outboard CV with the tie bar to the left of the shot. This is rod end adjustable outboard as you can see and inboard This is looking rearwards from the rear bulkhead at the tie bar pick up, which is adjustable at the rear bulkhead by way of a rod end. Looking From the rear, at the rearward adjustable arm.

Re: different rear arms/hub locking
Hi turbocox, looks like a decent set up for making adjustments and still does away with the need for the extra bar to 'lock' the steering ,also no rubber in yours which i hope helps (going to try taking out the bushes on my coupe i drive), how do you find the handling ? im not likely to try this one out for a while, but am thinking of using this set up on the road , cheers

Re: different rear arms/hub locking
Interesting, Do you have a pic of the front of the tie bar by any chance?

Re: different rear arms/hub locking
No picture, but it has Adjustable caster, as the tie bar has a rose joint at the bulkhead end.
The tie bar length is shorter due to the distance between the new forward lower arm.
The standard pickup point for the tie bar is still there.

Re: different rear arms/hub locking
If you look at this picture of a adjustable tie bar from minispares, the only difference to mine is that mine is shorter. . It justs bolts to where you would normally fit your rubber tie bar bushes The subframe has some extra strenghting at the pickup point, where the rose joints bolt on. It effectively makes the tie bar, and the forward of the two lower arms into a wishbone, and the rearward lower arm is acting as the toe adjustment. Have a look at this picture of an old 60's Lotus, and imagine the forward part of the rewerse A arm being a sparate arm becoming two lower arms like mine has.

Road and track (for some reason folk think it will crash about during normal road driving) the handling is great. I live just outside Milton Keynes the land of roundabouts, 90 degrees cornering is almost possible (anyone remeber Automan ) The other thing you need to remeber is if you have a early car your steering rack will be mounted to the front of the tub and not the subframe. If it is mounted to the tub, the rack will move, as the front bulkhead to where the rack is mounted flexes quite alot Move it to the subframe (as per later Coupe's) for saftey sake

Re: different rear arms/hub locking
Mini, with a machined block spun onto the bottom, using a balljoint shim to get it, as near damit 90degrees to the driveshaft.
Then it was passed to a fabricator at work, to weld in extra webbing strengthing.
Before anyone says it, Ahh......Oh..No you can't weld that..... it was done by a specialist, in cast welding.

You got a drawing of the block or was it done the traditional way?

realscamp wrote: .... is it similar to what you thought Neil ? interested to hear the pros and cons , cheers Been a little busy to comment, Yes simular to what I thought providing its done right it will have zero bump steer, Toe will be a little difficult to adjust by the look of it. One obesrvation I would like to see a little more triangulation between the two arms to stop them lozenging. Or say the front arm a bit more U section in shape and tied into the inner/outer pivot tubes. In all a good solution, and is better than the original GTM solutions in my view. Ill be honest the hub adaptor is looking simular to an idea I have for my new suspension I am constructing, a true wish bone top arm setup on my new frame , which is a combination of your car and Turbocox's ideas in a way. I am just struggling to get every thing around a Honda engine/gearbox. Neil
