Yep 50 years ago it all happened, does any body know how many other road going mid engine cars were made before GTM, I think De Tomaso were 1st in around 63 with the Lambo Miura around 66, but were definitely the most affordable

A few other candidates -- not sure of the dates:

Matra Djet 1962?
Deep Sandersaon 1961?
Ford GT40 Mk 111 1967?

I'll get my anorak..............

Not sure if the Matra was mid engine, Think it may be Renault engine like Alpine, GT40 could be driven on the road but was really intended as a track car, don't have any info on Deep Sanderson, but seem to remember them making a rather strange FW drive race car, have to get googling.
But safe to say GTM in the 1st 1/2 dozen, affordable and outlasted all others in spite of having a bit of a checkered production life.

Yes John Google is your friend here. In the mid 60s there were a number of low volume/ racing cars that could have been road registered individually -- as well as the GT 40 there's the Ginetta G12, the Chevron B8, Elva BMW GT 160 and even the Lola T70 that might have had the one-off road going car. Also we must'nt forget Chapman's council estate GT40 - the original Renault engined Europa only available in lhd at launch in 1966

So if the Unipower boys keep saying there cars aren't kits, does that mean the
Cox Gtm was the first offered mid engined kit built vehicle :?:

Surely the Cox must be a 1st as a kit car??
I googled the Matra and it was mid engine so that must be a 1st for mid engine road going, possibly a few Chevron B6/8, Ginetta G12, Ford GT40's etc could have been road driven, but lets be reasonable they were track cars and must be horrible on the road, so in my book do not count
