Post Radiator Hoses for K series
What are folks using for the two engine to underfloor (radiator) pipes? I currently have ones cut from (quite old) metro/100 pipes that don't seem to be readily available nowadays and i'm trying to avoid having lots of joints. Anyone used owt different?

Plumbing up my engine as well at the moment.

I do know that the return feed hose to the engine (that you've marked up with the 28") is a std MGF hose, part No PEH100820, its a one piece hose that fit perfectly. I'm trying to find someone who makes a silicone version of this at the moment. The rest I'm making up from aftermarket silicone hoses.

Cheers

Jamie

I've installed a PRT. Read here http://wiki.seloc.org/a/Pressure_Relief ... Thermostat for some details on why and how (albeit for the S1 Elise). Anything else is encouraging head gasket failure.

I also upgraded to 32mm pipes, a Passat radiator and deleted the heater feed pipe along the tunnel by teeing off the radiator feed under the front clam.

I did much the same as you Phil except that Im using a traditional remote thermostat (specialist components) in place of the PRT. The thermostat in the traditional position is a disaster waiting to happen in a mid-engined car i think.

Jamie - I have a PEH100820, just tried it on the passenger side and it does fit ok. However the hose end that goes on the underfloor ally pipe will need cutting shorter on my car as my ally pipes stick out quite far on that side. Also the MGF hoses are 32mm ID but the ally pips are only 28mm OD so will need an adapter to fit properly. I'm using one of these: https://www.carbuildersolutions.com/uk/ ... id-reducer its for 25 to 32 rather than 28 to 32 but i've tested it and it will fit with a bit of lubrication.

For the other hose that comes out of the top front of the engine, it's such a complex (to avoid exhaust & gear rods) shape i'm going to have to recreate it (would have liked a single piece to eliminate joins but just not doable even with flexible). So i'm using a Sherpa top hose cut in half to make the top 90° and the bottom section and will get a separate 90° for the middle bit and some metal pipe joiners (a 150mm & 75mm long) to connect em together.

...and now I discover a pinhole leak on my radiator. Great.

Good opportunity to go for a passat rad? I think mine was only £39 delivered brand new.

Nah, all the extra faff of mods to fit the Passat - not worth it IMO - especially as i've just re-piped it all for the radiator I have.

My rad is 26 years old (17 of which on the Libra) so it's not done bad I suppose.

With the cooling system properly bled i've never had overheat trouble with my std GTM setup.

I've got a serviceable metro rad with fan in my shed (that came out when my passat rad went in). If you are passing anywhere near Bristol its yours if you want it. Mine only overheated on track days!

Looks really good :D Shame about the rad leak.....a pain in the bum

What hose clips did you you use? They look nice and sturdy; Ive just bought some but they look a little lightweight.

Ta for the offer Sanz, bit of a trek would be. Anyway I've bought a brand new one this morning from Autorads in Sheffield - a good place with friendly staff who know their stuff. Cost £102 which ain't bad considering i don't need to buy new hoses (like I would if I went Passat), it's actually for the diesel engine. The fan temp switch hole is on the front face rather than facing the wing like my old one, but that'll just mean an extra hole cut in the FG support, no big deal.

Jay, I used these https://www.screwfix.com/p/t-mex-stainl ... pack/69166 needed a bit of excess strip cutting off. I initially thought they looked a bit flimsy cos the worm drive track is cut out rather than being 'embossed' into the strip but they tightened nicely with no sign of slipping plus they're all stainless.

Brand new radiator (Rover 100 Diesel type) fitted and it lives again! The only difference is the thermocouple for the fan switch is on the front face instead of sticking out the side. Meant cutting a hole in the FG rad frame but that was easy done.

I actually didn't drain the system to fit the new rad, I simply clamped the hoses near the rad outlets, pulled hoses off and then fitted bungs in the hose ends and released the clamps. The fluid in the radiator itself I allowed to run along and off the back of the floor into a tub.
After fitting the new rad (with SS mesh in front to protect it a bit) I re-clamped the hoses, removed the bung on the bottom hose (leaving clamp in place for now) and fitted it then filled the rad with coolant via the top. Finally I fitted the top hose and removed both clamps.
This meant very little air was trapped and any that was would be forced out into the bottle via the overflow pipe. Running the engine gave normally temps and the heater worked perfectly straight away.
