Post Spyder Door Hinge Nylon Bushes
Hi all, this is my first post after buying the red Spyder that Westfield had for sale (P19GTM).
The doors are a bit 'droopy' and I read in the build manual that they hinge on nylon bushes. Does anyone know the dimensions of the bushes as I'd like to make a set and have them ready before tackling the job.
Thanks.

Hi,

And welcome to the wonderful world of GTM ownership.

Best bet with these bushes is to buy a set of oliite bushes from bearing boys website, there not expensive and much better than the nylon equivalent.

Have a search on here and you'll find the reference......if you can't find it, drop me a PM and I'll find the reference from the invoice I have filed somewhere.

Cheers, Jamie

That's spot on, thanks. I've ordered those. Now I just need to access the rear of the striker pin on the driver's side to tighten it up. Looks like it could be quite a lengthy job to reach it. Would have been great if it had a captive nut!

Here is the link for the bushes for anyone coming across this in the future:

Do your hinge bushes fit directly in the fibreglass? If so there was an upgrade set made as they were found to give the problem you have as the FG would itself wear making the holes bigger or elongated. This kit is of course not available anymore but here's a pic.

Also I wouldn't use oilite bushes as they can be quite fragile and are more suited to low/moderate speed constant rotation rather than repeated short motion. Nylon Oilon or Acetal is more appropriate.

Mine are the old style, straight into fibreglass. What's not helping is that the Allen bolts holding the lower hinge to the sill are seized. Is there a captive plate or threaded insert that they screw in to? The bolt heads could well snap off so I may need to drill/tap/insert new threads.

The inside vertical surface of the sill has large access holes you can get to the other side of the fixings via. Assuming your car is carpeted you should be able to feel where they are unless someone has plated over them. There's also one next to the pedals, not arrowed on pic

If your car has a radio it's likely the speakers are mounted in these holes.

The bottom hinge is fixed using capheads and nuts and there is a spreader plate inside the sill. Non-captive as standard built.

FYI the OE door bushes were 13mm OD x 10mm ID x 15mm tall with a 2mm thick flange that was 18mm dia. Same as were used on the bonnet pivots.

Great info, thanks. Do you know if there’s an access hole to get to the nut on the back of the striker pin?
Another door related question - what’s the source for the rubber seal/trim around the door aperture and over the top of the screen? Also, do you use glue or maybe 3m Weatherstrip to hold it in place?

I think that's via the pillar behind the door. Might have to take a trim panel off (and maybe seatbelt).

I think the doorseal is Metro/Rover 100 doorseal. Do you mean the trim around the windscreen?

Both are just a push-fit.

Thanks again for all the info. I’ve adjusted the drivers door so it’s pretty good for now and will delve into the sill to fix the passengers door tomorrow.

Not sure if they were a GTM issued thing or RDM thing or? I'd say they are custom made though. I can pretty much guarantee Westfield will be no help at all.

Not even sure if parts 4 & 5 are from the mk1 hinges or new parts included in the kit either.

I'd guess your only hope is to find someone who has em fitted and is willing to take the door off/apart to measure take pics etc.

If I remember correctly the hinges on Spyder 9 has the same brackets (5&6) as shown in drawing. It does not have the bar 1 which was the improvement from just putting the bushes into the grp

Got the striker pin tightened up now so the drivers door is working pretty well now. It’s on the limits of adjustment due to the wear in the bushes but I can sort that out later. Thanks for all the help.
