will a rover 200 - 1999 ecu, fob 5as etc work on a later 160 mg tf vvc engine?

It might get the engine running, but nowhere near properly. Assuming it would physically plug in to the loom, you would need a piggyback board at the least to make it run properly.

I'd say to hold out for the proper piece of kit, or go standalone.

Well they're both vvc units just one is the 143 bhp version and the other the later 160 version

If you use the engine loom, ECU, 5AS, Relay pack, coil packs, HT leads and inlet manifold (just the top piece) from the MEMS2 VVC engine then yes the MEMS 3 engine will run just fine.

It's a lot of messing though unless you happen to have the 143 MEMS2 already fitted and need to change the engine for whatever reason.

The 160 engine has better pistons and rings, slightly different valve seats and better big end/main bearings.

If you are removing the 1.6 engine then it would be better to get the whole engine, loom, ECU etc with the MEMS3 160 VVC, at least it will all work. You are going to need to do a degree of wiring into the main loom anyway.

I recently changed my VVC engine. The engine I bought to replace it happened to be a later 160. It came with the loom, ECU and manifolds but not the other bits. To make things quicker and easier for myself I swopped all the bits off the 143 engine onto the 160 and hey presto it fired first time.

I'm not sure how different the ECU programmes are but it does feel a bit quicker than the old engine. Having said that the old one wasn't in it's first flush of youth!

If you need a PG1 gearbox with only 8000 miles on it to go with your new engine, let me know. :)

I just thought, if you get an MGF or TF engine, you will also need to source a dipstick and tube from another vvc engine as it has the funny oil filler jobby on the MGF/TF.

Also if you are going to track the car, have a look on Eliseparts for the windage tray. I fitted one in mine when I swopped engines for peace of mind.

Ive just bought a mgtf vvc motor but it doesnt come with the fob, ecu etc... but ive been offered the ecu etc
for £100. Seem about right?

Its coming with the loom though and manifolds etc.

I was asking this because there was a ecu and fob 5as unit etc off the earlier vvc motor on ebay that all.

What car do I need the dipstick out of? Or will the one off my 1.6 motor fit.

Was thinking about the windage tray ill have to look one up.

I guess it doesn't matter on the dipstick as long as it's from an alloy sump engine and the stick and tube match.

They have made a start. I am going over to Hull on Thursday to see where they are up to.

This is the email I got from Chris the other day.

We have a beam in there now and have discussed the size of your nuts !!!
We are fitting 8 mm at least to replace those and I will suggest to andy that we do captive bolts on them
Now we are into it the original stuff is a joke no wonder it flexed
Very confidant we can transform the car beyond all recognition
Could go as well as my little race car with a bit of luck

Chris

Can i just ask why the dipstick needs to be changed? Will the rear clam not shut with the tall one on or something?

Ermm, well, er............................ dunno. I guess coz you just don't want the silly big filler thing?

It might stop you fitting the expansion tank in the usual position.
