Post gelcoat!!?
My libra needs respraying in parts, may aswell be all to look perfect. But I haven't a clue what materials I need! Is it possible to by the gelcoat like you normally would with paint? Or will I have to find a match for it? Its the gtm libra red, I know that's vague but as far as I know off the website colour chooser there's only one type of red for the libra. Can anyone help??

Unless it's the far less common red which Bob Snooks car is, it's GTM's Cray Valley Red or RAL3020.
Otherwise known as Ford Radiant red amongst others.

O/T
I've been reading your thread and the car's looking great.
I'm concerned as to how you are going to register it without a VIN number though. Bron reckoned it was Category 'B'...?

I do have a vin number its still riveted to the tub, from what I gather from the dvla website its the same ordeal as if you want to put a cat C car back on the road which I did with my last car and it wasnt too much hassle.

All cars notified to DVLA as ‘written off’ within salvage categories A, B or C are required to pass a vehicle identity check (VIC), conducted by the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA), before DVLA will issue a registration certificate V5C.

If a car has been rebuilt as part of the repair process, this can call the identity of the car into question. When applying for a VIC you'll be asked to declare whether your car’s chassis or monocoque body has been replaced or modified in any way. The information you provide will enable VOSA to decide whether your VIC application can proceed or whether to refer your car to a DVLA local office for inspection, where it'll be assessed in line with DVLA’s rebuild guidelines instead.

If a car fails a VIC because its identity cannot be confirmed, it won't be entitled to retain its original registration mark. It may, be possible to register the car with DVLA if evidence of British National Type Approval in the form of a Minister's Approval Certificate can be produced. This may be obtained by applying to VOSA for a Single Vehicle Approval Inspection (please note that the 'Enhanced' category may apply). However before doing so, you'll need to obtain an alternative vehicle identification number (VIN) from the DVLA Local Office.

Only problem is that I know the reg was n2bro but I take it this was taken off the libra when it was written off and put on Brons new car.

I wanted to put a personal plate on anyway but I dont know what they will make of me turning up to a VIC check without any reg number. Ill just have to say it used to be n2 bro but will have been removed and put on the previous owners new car

Thanks for the help re the colour code!!!

Ah! I thought Category 'B' cars had to be crushed, although parts from them could be used....

That's too much watching 'Wrecks to Riches' with the bald bloke on the Discovery Channel!!

PS I do have Gelcoat swatches somewhere, but I'm not sure where...

Ill probably just go with 2 pack paint rather than gelcoat now I know what the code is and what have you. Just found some, 5 litres of radiant red 2 pack paint with thinners and with hardener .. £60!!

Thats cheered me up!

Oh and thats what I thought too, but it seems pretty crystal clear that it can go back on the road again from reading that doesnt it?

Right. I've done some indepth research. (Rung my brother-in-law...LOL! He does mechanical stuff for a body repair shop ) and he confirms that it can go back on the road with a VIC. BUT he did show some concern as it is a GRP monococque. Ultimately engineers are asked to put their name to the condition of the tub and it's not easy to guarantee the condition visually. This is why insurance companies err on the side of safety and Category 'B' them, apparently... Have you spoken to any engineers who get involved in this??

Sorry that was a bi short i had to dash off. I havent looked into this but I dont see why there would be any reason the tub would cause any problems as it isnt damaged. At the most theres a bit of a mark on the underneath of the car but i can easily repair it. To be honest it wouldnt surprise me if it was written off more because they didnt know what it was and it looked worse than it is.

Post Re: gelcoat!!?
Hi all,

On the subject of Gelcoat, does anyone know what colour the yellow gelcoat is?

At the time I bought my Libra from Paddy (going back some years this) he told me it was Protec Yellow, although I see from my trips to Halfords it quite close to a Fiat Yellow, which the specific name of is escaping me.

Any help much appreciated.
