I have been reading the forum with great interest for a while now and have *finally* got around to registering so that I can join in with the fun, IYSWIM.

For reasons that I needn't bore you with, lurking in the back of the barn I've got a never-been completed-or-registered GTM Coupe that deserves a better fate than continuing to collect dust.

It's an early Sutton Bonington period kit with 10 inch wheels. The chassis and body have been bonded together and most of the GTM-specific parts are present, I believe. Subframes and basic running gear have been fitted - enough to make a rolling chassis - but it really needs to be started again from scratch and done properly.

Assuming there's any point in bothering, of course...

I've been looking at the IVA requirements and have not found any absolute "show stoppers" but perhaps I've overlooked something - headlight positioning?

Does anyone know what modifications Primo made when he / they took over the Coupe?

Or would selling the components off piecemeal be the most practical solution?

If you use hi-lo adjustables you can wind up the ride heigh to its highest setting and the lights will fall into the legal requirements

Then just reset the hi-lo adjustables once you have past the test,
but don't forget to tell your insurance that you have "lowered" the car (modifed it from standard )

I wonder if larger wheels (12" or 13") would make enough difference? (While also offering better options for tyres, brakes, etc.)

One potential IVA problem I *have* spotted is that the windscreen I've got (still in its Triplex wrapper!) has only B.S/AU type markings, which would have been OK for SVA but IVA now requires an 'E-mark'

Remove everything that you can - side and rear windows etc, and don't fit the sunroof. If it isn't there, it can't be failed.
You'll need a collapsible steering column. (See MMOC forum for ideas)
Angle of sight of headlights may be a problem, you might need side markers.
Fuel filler should be accessible without opening the front clam. (See Porsche 911 for ideas)

Edit: And maybe someone could lend you a windscreen for the test?

What about emissons? Can an A-series pass the emission test?

When it was SVA it only applied to cars under 30 years old. So take a couple of years to build it, get some paperwork to prove when it was manufactured, and put it through the loophole.

It might have changed for IVA, but somehow, I doubt it.

When I did an SVA last year the emmissions was decided upon by the age of the engine and not the age of the kit. I would check this out to be sure but I think the IVA is the same. SO prove the age of the engine and if it is old enough then you could get away with a smoke test or in my case the engine was a 1979 vintage and had an easier time than a later model would have had.

AIUI, the situation is as "lyndiloo" says. If I take an engine from a known donor vehicle (with paperwork to prove) then it only has to meet the emission standard in force when *that* vehicle was manufactured. A pre-catalyst mini or metro would seem suitable, and would supply some other useful parts.

True. It currently has a Triumph Dolomite column (which I've seen in a number of GTMs) - should meet the requirement, I hope.



Fuel fillers are one area where IVA rules are stricter than SVA were (not allowed to be in the engine or luggage compartment). This is a real headache for anyone trying to get a Freestyle Buggy through the test - their tanks are behind the seats or beside the engine. Not a problem for the GTM - I already have a hole just in front of the wiper arm!

I'm in East Devon, near Axminster.

Returning to the issue of possible SVA / IVA date exemptions, there *was* a blanket exemption for imported cars more than 10 years old. This has been removed - bad news for Japanese car enthusiasts.

The Motor Vehicles (Approval) Regulations 2001 [which brought the SVA test into existence] states [I paraphrase]:

"These Regulations apply to every motor vehicle - to which [The Motor Vehicles (Type Approval) (Great Britain) Regulations 1984] apply;"

- which would seem to imply that vehicles constructed prior to 1984 would be treated differently. The issue may well hang on how you define "constructed" or "manufactured".

Off to do some more research before I approach VOSA directly.
