Hello

First post! I'm revamping a coupe with a friend and we only have the body and tub. I've got new subframes and suspension, just picked up a set of early front hubs and drive flanges. Also have a set of new back plates ready to go on.
I have stripped the hubs of all there old drums and back plates, just waiting for new bearings and ball joints to arrive.
Just need to know how you have enlarged the hole in the middle of the new brakes? Problem i see is that it will need to be dead centered and i don't have access to a lathe.
Have you guys sent your brakes off somewhere to be re-drilled etc or is there a good accurate method to do at home?

Took a picture of the bits in case you wonder what i'm on about. Bonus the drive flanges have extended studs buy the look of them.

2 things, that backing plate is for a rear brake setup not front, the backing plate should be able to slot directly over the bearing housing on the front hub. The other, single leading shoes are a waste of time, the braking efficiency is rubbish, you need the later twin leading shoe, i.e. slave cylinder top and bottom

Thats the back plate etc that i used (ie the rear setup) You turn it 90o for the handbrake and cut the center out for the hub/cv joint. If you had to use the front back plate you would have no handbrake....

i have a pair of drum brakes already converted,i did a disc brake covertion so they are spare,but someone did say they are Toffee and i agree, you can pm me with an offer if you like, they come complete with minifin drums. cheers steve

I found the pictures on here for the diameter of the hole. 3 inch. The mounting holes i can do by hand once the centre is sorted. I don't trust hole saws, and need a method for getting it dead centre.

'Back in the day' that's one of the bits the factory offered to modify for you.
I would think it needs to be done quite accurately, without a lathe it's going to be difficult.
I'd be looking for a friendly local machine shop.

If you give me the two circle diameters i.e. original and new, I will make up a template in CAD for you, then just cut out the inner circle and place over original hole and trace/scribe around the second, then its just a case of cutting out to that line, in the end its not spinning and is bolted to the hub, thus the cut out should not have to be mm perfect

Is it not the small holes that need to be mm perfect or it wont fit and the drum will rub on the back plate?

I would have thought this too could be done, if you had a front hub backing plate, couldn't you use this to mark the position of the stub holes?

All the drawings say is the large hole is 3''. But as Andy said, you could use the front back plate as a template. Just remember the rear back plate needs to turn 90o for the handbrake to work in a vertical plane not in the horizontal plane as the mini did.

Rossabitz has a "friendly" machine shop.
Send the back plates to me, I'll do them for you.
Very cheap. All dimensions as the build manual.
