Well the tear down has started.. windows and most of the interior pulled out, just have to put the seats somewhere and finish the RH windows. The rear frame and engine were dropped out and the bumper taken off. Car has had all the running gear sorted and was finally running well..so time to tear is apart and get it ready for painting and new interior.

I will probably do a little deeper shade of red, as the current red is quite orange based. Interior will be black, seats may have red insert..not sure on that yet..body looks a lot better in the pictures, but in reality there are quite a few chips to sort out and someone had painted the car with brush and roller, so the finish is terrible..it will take a lot of sanding and prep to get it ready for painting. I also want to clean up the door fit, new front signal lights, and a fuel filler cover in the front bonnet. Lots to do!

I have a red coupe - probably the same red as yours - it does look more orange in some light. I also have a Kawasaki green one - this is very different.

It does look the same, tends to be more orange in daylight, and redder at night.. It seems like a common color for the GTM Coupe was some shade of Red.. There are hundreds of shades of red available now, so trying to pick one is going to be hard!

I really hate removing the sliding windows, especially when the rail is held in with 7 small rusted screws! It took hours to drill everything out and then pry the rail out as it was also glued in with some sealant.. they are going back in with some small stainless screws with nuts from the underside..probably one on each end..enough whining.. off to clean it all up and put it aside for after the painting..

More work this weekend.. all the rest of the bits on the front of the car has been removed.. and started cleaning and repainting everything i am taking off.. will need new headlight pods as both are rusted away along the bottom. The wiper mount is also rusted away along the base, so will have to fab one up. wiring harnesses were removed, and cleaned up so they will be ready to install after painting. The rear bumper was cleaned up, so now ready to fix the cracks in it. Engine and rear frame were de-greased, so i can get this painted up as well.. Seat belts now out, and cases all cleaned, also bout a bunch of replacement bolts, and putting them with the rebuilt parts, so everything can go back with new clean bolts! Wiper assembly was clean and painted, Lot's more cleaning and rebuilding to do, and will soon start working on the body. Need to fit the new rear lights, and figure out a box at the rear for the carb, recess a cover in the front bonnet for accessing the gas tank without opening the bonnet, and find some better front signal lights .

Any ideas for front turn signal/park lights??

Sorted the front signal lights and they are on order..

Fabricated a new windshield wiper motor mount and the old one was a bit rusted!

Working out how to mount this cover on the bonnet so I will have access to the gas filler.. it's a cover from a SmartCar.

Any suggestions on the best way to paint the dash and door cards? I don't want to loose the grain pattern..

Pulled out the shift mechanism to clean it up and fix the reversing switch. The switch was installed in the wrong spot so was not working. Switch now works when reverse engaged.

Bought some new dampers for the car.. same ones I am using on the VTEC Mini.. Will have to play with the settings once I am back on the road. There are 12 clicks from soft to hard on these ones.

Starting on the RH side sill as there was rust bubbling through. I was able to push a screwdriver through on a few spots, so out with the cut off tool and made a few holes..

Image

Worst area was at the front, where a previous repair was done rather poorly and filled in with sealant, rather than proper welded in metal..so I have cut this section completely out and will fabricate a new curved sill for this area.. I have already sprayed the inside with zinc based primer while the access is available.

A lot of spare rusty metal.. the car is getting lighter!

Image

Once everything is dry, I'll start welding in some new metal..

I have chosen the new color for the car as well. It will be a version of the Tartan Red recipe, but not putting in the white tint, to keep it quite red . Once I spray the engine compartment, I'll post a picture..

Well got the RH side sills finished today, as well as a bunch of problems with rust on the floor area. I spent a bunch of time cleaning up old patches in the rear area of the interior.. glad to see someone who welds worse that I do.. as these were just horrid! I also redid a rear frame support bar as it had been hammered flat to provide clearance for the starter motor, so that is now fixed. A few more areas to cut out rust and then all the metal work will be done...hopefully by next weekend, and then I'll start on cleaning up the fiberglass shell, and fixing things like the door and window frame fit. Will take a few pics next weekend. Mike

Did you just use a rattle can then? and a very light coverage to keep the grain..
