Post subject:  Fuel Tank design

Hello all

I am wanting to order an alloy fuel tank to replace the original steel item and just wanted to ask:

Is the tanks wedge shape for any other reason apart from allowing the mounting of the spare wheel?

I am currently musing over my engine set-up but whichever way I go I want to get a bigger tank so my plan is to ditch the spare wheel and have a larger capacity tank with internal baffles/foam fitted.

(My car is a 13" wheel 1990 kit by the way in case that matters)

Thanks

Rob :)

I assume wedge shape to slope with the bonnet with the spare ontop. The standard tanks are horrible.

Mine is foam filled. Plenty of room for a bigger tank

Yes that's right wedge tank. I guess they work but I'm not a huge fan of it to be honest.

Good to know it's just for the wheel that's it's shaped like it is. I wasn't sure if it was wedged to aid airflow through and beyond the radiator.

I got an ali one made up at work, as a student project.
It's based on the original design and a bit of CAD work.
Vent pipe on top, along with the fuel return that fills a little snail shell shaped sump on bottom of the tank.
The pickup feeds out of this straight to pump mounted on the slope between the legs of the subframe, above the radiator pipes.

The filler is no the top, and this stops the slow feed needed at the pumps with the standard design.

My coupe tank had the filler in the centre.
If I could choose again, I would have the filler at the side to make filling it easier and with less mess.

The filler neck needs to be at the highest point of the tank.
