My car is fitted with what I think is the standard GTM gear change set up. 1st and 2nd gears are where you would expect but 3rd and 4th are in the middle of nowhere, up changing isn't too bad but it's hard to find 3rd on the way down the box. Anything I can adjust or does something need replacing?

The linkage goes around the houses quite a bit, so go underneath and look for any worn or sloppy joints while somebody is jiggling the gear lever about

Thats called a standard A Series gearbox.

What I did was to attach a small spring to the bottom of the "U Bend" that pulled it to the right.
This made it have a "Home" in the 3rd/4th position like a modern car.
Then for 1st/2nd you pushed against the spring, made it a lot more friendlier to use.

I don't suppose you have a photo of where you put it?

It wouldn't be so bad if 3rd and 4th were all the way to the right but they are somewhere in the middle. If I could get a spring to centralise the gear stick that would be great!

Hi PMC,
The standard bottom plate on the BL Mini rod change box should have a vertical plate running along its center line, the the gear lever should touch in the 3-4th gear slot giving something to "lean" against when looking for those gears, the gear lever is lifted to clear this plate when entering revers gear, I don't have a picture of the original plate but have attached one I made that was slotted to allow adjustment when my gear selector housing was reverersed for twinny mini use

I also replaced one of the matalastic bushes on the gear-lever mounts to a phosphor bronze plug which made a Massive difference to finding 3rd more regularly. 8)

I've also been looking at using some cables and a bell crank, but other projects keep getting in the way at the moment
