Post subject:  GTM COUPE STEERING COLUMN

Hello again,
Have been busy with putting suspension back together and on to car, along with new brake system now bled and ready, new alloy petrol tank being fabricated along with new brackets, main fuel line in. We are now ready to put back on steering column, has any body used another type than the original one fitted, it looks a bit iffy, or can advise on a column to fit.

Regards, KenHind.

Hi Ken,
As I did not have one I made my own, a tube as the column using a spherical rod end as the support, a flange welded on to mount the steering wheel and a splined bit in the other end to fit the U/J before the rack.
Don't know if it would pass IVA, but the system is common in most racing cars.

I also did my own, using a steel tube with 2 bushes at either end. Fixed to the column support with u bolts
I then fitted a MGF collapsible column between that and the cut down section of the original column that fits into the rack
That has 2 benefits, you can fit the column straight and it is safer in the event of a shunt!

If you're looking to get through IVA I think you'll need a joint in the column -- maybe look at Metro/Rover 100 as a start point or contact Derek Hambly to check what he used on his recent Mini based build.
