Hi guys Starting to put together the bits for my oil cooler, Is my wee schematic correct? Sorry for the poor drawing, CAD has a lot to answer for! |

Pretty sure you have reversed the flow, it flows out from the sandwich plate on the front of the block. John |

so it is goes from the oil pump through the engine, out through the filter/housing and back up the transfer pipe to the hole in the block? Now I write it down it makes sense... That is without the oil cooler obviously |

Green is go If you have a stripped block the best solution is to drill and tap 2 holes into the block, there are 2 cast bosses for this purpose from the time when the A series was used in FJ and early F3 cars, this allows the filter to be before the pump. John |

That's the 2 bosses, if you drill them you need to screw in a blanking plug in the oil passage between the 2 bosses to force the oil to go to the filter and return to the oil passage, I did this on my old Cox John |

John Interesting, So you take off the oil from the first boss, through the filter the back in so the oil is filtered before it goes on to the pump? Do you then go from the top block exit, through the cooler then back in where the filter normally goes? Also wondering how you fitted the plug between the 2 bosses? Simon |

Plugging between the 2 bosses is by removing the plug in the end of the block, taping a thread down to the level of the 2nd boss, screwing in a plug between the bosses, then screwing in a 2nd plug to replace the factory original plug you drilled out at the start of this paragraph The oil cooler take off is from the standard filter mount now replaced by and alli plate with a 1/2"BSP/UNF connector with a hose to the cooler returning to the normal port by the relief valve. So I found a page where I got this quote from, which explains what the bosses were for on the XSP (F3/Junior engine) It ran a dry-sump system that used the stock oil pump as the pressure pump and had the scavenge pump placed roughly where the mechanical fuel pump would have been on a stock engine. The scavenge pump was driven from a second scroll gear (similar to the distributor drive gear) on the real 649 camshafts. The oil passage on the rear of the engine that normally carried oil from the pan up to the stock oil pump is not drilled through on the Junior engines, and the bosses on the rear of the block are drilled to provide scavenge in and out ports. Hi Simon, That's it, with another advantage in a GTM, the front of the engine is cluttered, so much easier to connect oil pipes of the back of the block and have your remote filter behind the engine |

The front of the engine is cluttered with alternator (plus a/c Compressor ) original filter housing or oil cooler take off, distributor and starter motor, the rear is pretty open space and much easier to fit a filter housing, If I were building up a bare block i would do it again. John |
