A Series Front Plate
Do I need to drain the oil before I remove the engine front plate (the one behind the timing gears)? I have an oil leak in that area and suspect that it's coming from between the plate and the block so want to change the gasket and it also has a bolt hole that needs retapping. Thanks.

No.
A small amount of oil will come out when you take off the timing chain cover but the oil level in the sump should be well below crankshaft height.
