Post subject:  VVC Link Shaft Problem

I've been rebuilding a VVC engine to go into my Spyder when its done.

I've been having a problem with the VVC timing/function. I'd spent ages getting all the timing marks sorted and lined in then re-assembled the cam ladder back on the head. The hydraulic control unit plunger is supposed to be moveable by hand (or compressed air blown into the cylinder) but mine was really stiff and was sticking firm at certain parts of the throw. This was with the cam belt off and the inlet cam all pointing up so no valve spring pressure interfering.

Eventually I took the cam ladder back off and disassembled it again, this time I had a real close look at the link shaft. (previously I left it taped to the cam ladder as instructed by one of the web guides).

I found a couple of the teeth are knocked out of line. Can't imagine what could have done it, must have been knocked pretty hard.

I thought about trying to knock them back or grind them smooth but found a shaft on ebay fairly cheap so have ordered that.

I guess the moral is to check everything when you have the chance. All part of the fun of used engines I guess...

Good find, both the damaged shaft and the replacement :)

OD is 15mm (not 100% accurate - just using a tape measure, not calipers), 17 teeth.

What are you planning?

Shaft is in, timed up, and the cam ladder back on now. The HCU can now turn the shaft and in turn the VVC mechs by blowing air into the oil temp sender hole with a tyre pump so all seems to be as it should be now. :D

Ok thanks, too small.

It was for something completely not car related. Move along :)
