Post subject:  Bike engine conversion k3

I’m thinking of getting a GTM rossa of some description
Hoping for a K3.
The reason I want the k3 is, I was hoping to be able to retain the rover gearbox, gutting the internals but retain reverse, 5th gear and the diff.
Some how connect the output sprocket of the bike engine to the shaft that would have held the clutch plate on the gearbox.
I’m guessing it’s not doable or others would have gone down this route.
What are your thoughts?

I see that there is a bike engined Rossa 2 on ebay at the moment. For some reason they chose to mount the bike engine up front. Looks like it needs a bit of work to finish it off but it seems most of the useful bits are there so maybe worth a punt.

I had seen one on eBay. Engine up front in red, fixed roof.
Looks interesting.
I haven’t seen the other.
The one I had seen was up for £2k reserve not met. In the north east.
Ideally I would like to keep the engine in the back, in the same place as the original engine.
Then figure out how to connect it to the wheels.

Unless you are going to use this solely on the track in my humble opinion you'll be wasting your time & money. Bike engines are high revving no torque motors, totally unsuitable for car use.

Great in bikes though :wink:

I've never actually driven a BEC but have a few friends who own them and love them, and not just on the track. Their cars are very light though, 450-500kg. I think much more than that and you'll find the bike engine struggles a bit and gearbox and clutch become very unreliable. They all took a while to get used to pulling away and still embarrass themselves when leaving the pub car park quite often!

Many Westies are fitted Hyabusa engines which do have enough torque for road driving, My Jedi with a kawasaki ZX10R engine is a screamer with peek power at 13700 and max torque at 11400 but is still drive able around the paddock easily, Oh and I normally use 2nd gear off the line feeding the clutch in around 9000.

There are a lot of small light weight car engines that produce good tractable power and torque. It may be worth looking at those rather than mating a bike engine into the car.
Using a modern light weight engine would lower the overall weight of the car and careful planning could produce a better power to weight ratio than you get with the rover engines.
What ever route you decided to take the same fitting and fabrication to get it into the car would be the same. The car engine would of course be less work as you would already have a set up which has been designed from the start to fit a car.
If you want to be really radical you could go electric, if you search the forum you will see that was going to be the route I followed. The electric gives you massive torque and decent power which would be hard to match with any petrol engine you could fit into the K3 body.

The big disadvantage of any bike engine is the lack of reverse gear, there are diffs available with built in reverse but not cheap and making the power unit that bit heavier. To make a track Jedi compliant Jedi fit an electric reverse which nobody uses!!

I would love to go electric, very expensive though.
The bike engine idea was a cheaper option but if it isn’t going to make the power\torque it might be better to do an mgf conversion

here is a possible cheaper way to join almost any engine into the K3.
Porsche 924 transaxle and suspension, grafted on to the rear of the car complete with torsion bar suspension.
The torque tube can be made any length you want, shortened or extended.
Any engine can now be easily joined to the torque tube.
This gives you 5 speeds and reverse along with the differential all in one easy step.
I am of course over simplifying the work needed, but it would open up a lot of options.
True mid engine with the engine going where the fuel tank sits just now.
front engine rear wheel drive with the engine under the front clamshell.
Possible engines for those who must have loads of horse power would be subaru boxer stripped to the basics.
