Is there an expert on dry sump systems on this forum - I really need some advice - I have spoken to PACE who make them (and their pumps are fitted to my car but I do not thingk the main tank is one of theirs) but they seem a bit woolly? I have problems with the oil foaming and going everywhere when it returns to the main tank and then the catch tank overflows, there is no crankcase pressure involved.
I have ordered a new PACE tank but I am not convinced.
The problem as explained to me is that when the oil gets pumped back into the main tank if there is no diffuser on the pipe, as the oil squirts out of the pipe it becomes aerated, the PACE tanks now have a "fantail" on the end of the pipe to stop this?????

Hoping someone can help.

regards

David

Got pictures of your tank and of the inside?

I can get a piture of the outside, but the tank does not split open (without an angle grinder) butr about a third of the way down the tank (it is approx 7" dia by 15" tall) there is a baffle plate with a hole in the centre (probably about 1.5" dia).

There is an outlet at the bottom of the tank and almost at the top through the wall is a connection where the return oil appears as a thick stream. On the return there is no diffuser, no downturn on the pipe, it just exhasts the oil into the tank. On the top of the tank there is a solid screw on top to fill the tank, there are then two other pipes through the top of the tank. One is an overflow to the catch tank and the other is a crankcase breather.

Got a picture yet david.

From some of the tanks I have seen they have more baffles in than just one.

One of the tanks I was looking at at work had a baffle near the top just below the inlet so as the oil came in it ran around it before going through the center hole.

On the same tank there is another baffle a few inches above the outlet which is not at the very bottom of the tank. it is on the side of the tank and internally there is a tube that extends this to the center of the tank about quater of an inch above the floor of the tank

Aaaaah well. I now have major engine problems. I got carried away with the Kawasaki engine and broke a valve so I now have bigger issues to resolve. There is damage to the head and to one of the pistons, plus I am also clearer about what was happening to the dry sump system.
All of the pistons were showing signs of burning and in one or two cases the crown of the piston had burnt sufficiently to allow allow gas past the top ring so that at high revs there must have been considerable crankcase pressure which would not help.
The tanks now all seem to have pipes, diffusers or additional baffles to get the air out of the returning oil. My tank just has the one baffle across the diameter of the tank.
I will keep you posted.

David.

We have to look on the bright side, in the event where the engine expired on the last lap, I scred the 4th fastest time of the day, behind 2 single seaters and a 400bhp MG.
The plan is good we just need to do a bit better,
