Post subject:  New Member F41 GTM Automatic to Manual Conversion

Hi there,
I have just purchased an automatic Libra F41 GTM.
It will not be staying CVT because it doesn't suit the character of the car.
When driving it sounds like the driver is a complete bell end revving the nuts out off the car :D
I will have some specific questions regarding the conversion to manual, but thought I would say hi first :oops:

Hi and welcome. Looks like a nice car. I tend to agree on the CVT - what were they thinking! Hopefully not too hard to swap over. I guess the things to consider are how the gearbox end mounts to the frame - might need a new mounting to suit the PG1 and the ones that GTM originally supplied are not available. Can be made though as that is what I did when going from R65 to PG1.
Gearchange - probably easiest to go for the MGF cable change but there other options. In my experience a PG1 gearbox from a TF (ideally VVC for the lower final drive ratio) coupled with MGF gear cables workes best as the TF gearbox bellcrank comes forward (MGF goes bakwards) so the MGF cables are long enough to reach the TF bellcrank.
Other than that, I have a vague notion that the ECU is different but that could be nonsense!

Looks like a lovely car.

I agree with Sanzomat with the MGF/TF gearchange. I might go a step further if budget allows and go to Mike Satur for his Slickshift. They give a fantastic shift quality, better than standard or Elise.

No that isn't my collection or garage!
That is the dealer 'Total Headturners' in Essex where I bought the car.
Thanks for the suggestions re gearchange.
I'm not sure if I can just change the flywheel, l believe the crank sensor has to see a certain pattern or it won't run and there are different flywheels.....
I don't think the CVT had a special ECU but I might be wrong.
Is the pedal box from a Rover 100? It looks like the clutch pedal pivot is there, all I need is a clutch pedal :D

BTW the car was factory built at GTM with the CVT and the original owner's wife had a disability.
So it was speced like this for a reason but it ruins the driving pleasure of a sporty car.
It is very rare with CVT but not desirable to anyone to keep this way.

Pedals are GTM mixed with Metro/Rover 100 for the Master cylinders and servo. Hydraulic clutch uses MGF master and slave.

My engine appears to be a 1.6 and seems healthy enough.
It's also nicely detailed.

Nick I looked at this car couple of years ago and it was in nice condition apart from one large star crack on the nearside rear. Was interested for my wife as she only likes auto but could not get in and out easily. Thought about converting like you but bought a V6 in the end. Are you road tax free with that reg ? Good luck with the conversion

Why would the car be road tax free with a vanity plate?
The plate is a nice bonus but I don't think it has any road tax advantages.....

Would I have to change the whole loom or just the engine loom to fit a VVC?
I could be persuaded if it were the later!

Just the engine loom. In the 5 years since I bought my Spyder I've changed from a Mems3 1.6 (with R65 gearbox and rod change) to a Mems2 VVC143 with PG1 and cable change and now to a Mems3 VVC160 (it was originally built with a 1.4 and R65), each time just using the engine loom that came with each engine and mating it to the GTM body loom. It isn't too hard and if you do want to go down that route there is a very useful spreadsheet giving wire by wire advise on what to connect to what somewhere on the forum. I can't take credit for it but I think I've got it downloaded if you can't find it.

Link from Juls in fourth post down in this thread. There was only one wire that this spreadsheet got wrong for me - the 5AS to ECU handshake wire is apparently blue/slate on an MG ZR engine loom (what this spreadsheet is based on) but yellow/red on an MG TF engine loom!
