Oliver's K3
So after a few months of searching I've got my first kit car! It's a little bit rough around the edges with faded gel-coat, but has a 160 VVC engine, a decent roll cage and seems to be in a generally sound condition, so should make a great car with a little work.

Re: Oliver's K3
Sounds like it has all the right ingredients. Just a little bit of TLC!
Nice to have a project that you can drive while you improve it.

Quote: Looks good, any more pictures??, saves a lot on typing... Not yet, it was dropped of yesterday while I was at work, and off on holiday tonight so will have to wait until I'm home, bad timing I know and I'm itching to get going on it! I've SORNed it for a couple of months as the engine has no service history (and done 50k) so will give it a bit of TLC , but I'm aiming to get it on the road for May (and aiming to make the Monday of Stoneleigh) I've already started to put together a jobs/parts list (roughly outlined below) so any advice would be great! 1) Waterproofing - currently lets in lots of water in, any tips on how you got your's watertight? Also what door/roof gutters do people use? 2) Soundproofing/Noise - it is pretty load , internally it's still bare fiberglass (been in quieter race cars) and externally its currently got an Elise Janspeed exhaust (looking at a decat silencer but not sure if that will be enough, should I want to go to track days) 3) Suspension - currently got a slightly leaky rear hydragas sphere so will likely put some coil-overs on (along the lines of how PEEPs has done the rear on his) Currently doing my University placement designing F1 suspension, so how hard can it be to get the spring rates right... 4) Headlight covers - currently none on the car and I think it spoils the look a little bit, but have heard they're not available any more - so was going to have a go at making my own. Anyone tried this?

Re: Oliver's K3
Hello Oliver, Your K3 looks good on the photo. a) Water ingress - A bead of clear silicone applied to the joint with the windscreen top rail and where the top of door the glass meets the rubber edge seal. The seal needs to be the right width to make good contact with the seal. Even then it is difficult to seal where the front edge of the glass comes up to meet the seal because the triangle shaped piece of fibreglass on the door creates a step where it meets the rubber. b) The rear bulkhead needs sound proofing even to stop the sound of the fuel pump reaching the cabin. I wrapped the silencer and lined the boot inside with the silvery plastic heat reflective stuff you put behind domestic radiators. It is not proper sound proofing but it is light weight and does not mind water. I cannot help you with the other items I am still running the original hydrogas and the original lens covers (cracked near fixings).

Quote: Your K3 looks good on the photo. Thanks - it's the colour I really wanted, it doesn't show up in the above photo but it's quite faded but otherwise sound so should polish up reasonably well. Quote: I believe rossabitz on here sells the headlight covers for the rossa. Yeah, I've sent him an email to see how much they are currently, but had heard previously that they're £60 for a pair and I can make them for 1/5th of that so was going to give it a go myself. I haven't done a full investigation into where the water is coming it yet but I'm going to start the waterproofing this weekend starting with the obvious places such as a few visible holes and around the hard top/chassis join where I can see water coming in, I've also seen a few people have added roof/door gutters, does anyone have any experience of what works best/what you've used on your cars?

Re: Oliver's K3
Managed to get a bit more work done today; roof is now sealed with gutters fitted (I took the photos before fitting), heater now has all 3 speeds and the VVC Hydraulic control unit no longer leaks I also remembered to take some more photos... Attachment:

This shows just how faded the gel-coat is, although a bit of a test with some gel-coat polish seems to suggest that it will buff up ok.

Re: Oliver's K3
Not done a huge amount over the past few weeks, but added a bit of soundproofing which has made a huge difference as the fuel tank no longer resonates, I also had the cam cover off so decided to give it a bit of a tart up Attachment:

Had a spare couple of hours so fitted the front clam pins, took a fair amount longer than I had expected, but I'm really happy with how they look. Attachment:

Re: Oliver's K3
Had my first drive today, all seemed to be pretty good and had forgotten how fast it is, although driving it has definitely added a few more jobs to the list! Let's hope I make it to Stoneliegh tomorrow!

Re: Oliver's K3
Think I should probably do an update after having been on the road for a year. This is now my only car so used reasonably regularly, although not for commuting as I go via bike or walk. I have undertaken a few projects on the car, mainly tidying up or improving bits, but also a few major overhauls such as making a completely new wiring loom for it! Not in any particular order but some of the bigger projects have been... Covering the dash, it was a strange anti reflective spray paint, looked a bit like concrete, now got a leatherette covering with a flocked speedo cover. Attachment:

Making headlight covers, my car didn't come with any so I thought how hard can it be! Turns out with a bit of time, pretty easy! I made an aluminium former then heated perspex sheets up over it in the oven then trimmed to size! cost about £12 all in for 2 covers! Attachment:

New wiring loom, ecu and engine loom. I was driving to work last year and the car just cut out, after trying everything and nothing working I had a look at the loom along the side of the passenger compartment - it was melted and pretty much one big mess! I was also getting power to wires one the ECU that you shoudn't and none to ones you should! So it was new loom time... took about a week, bought a metro loom, new ECU and MG ZR 160 wiring loom to base it off of, but needed a lot of changing/chopping/extending as I've got an Elise engine and mgf dash so most of the pugs were wrong! Fitting an LSD, as I use the car for autosolos I was finding it pretty hard to put the power down (1.8vvc 160), and near impossible in the wet. This has helped and the car is far more fun to drive too This ended up taking 3 days as the donor box had an uknown history as shorter ratios I wanted to swap the diff into my box. Turns out both boxes had damage to various sections so it was a case of building one good box from the 2 donors! Thanks Peeps for the donor box! Attachment:

I'm also in the process of making a soft top, quite slow progress but want to get it right! Attachment:

I've also fitted coil-overs to all 4 corners using the brackets Peeps designed (thanks again!) which has tranformed the car. I've also fitted a rear boot, although it needed a bit of trimming to fit with an Elise exhaust fitted (Thanks again peeps for the parts!!!!). No specific photos of the brackets or boot, but the coil-overs can be seen here. Attachment:

And finally, Stoneleigh!! Was nice to see a few more of the cars and put a few faces to the usernames! Attachment:
