I have been been thinking how to fight the oxidised gelcoat problem.

Well ...

So I could, sand cut , compound the oxides off then wax,seal and polish.

and from what I understand it will probably come back, so repeat as necessary.

I am quite lucky aside from the oxidation , the gelcoat is in good condition.

Looking for something in my garage... comon thing I found a can of clear coat lacquer, with uv protectant in it.

So my question is if I did all the sanding cutting compound bit to get back to a good finish, would the clear coat work any longer than wax?? and no problems with a bit of overspray... its clear

Or any other ideas

We had a demo by meguires at the Ginetta AGM their tech cutting compound is very impressive even applied by hand a totally oxidised race car came up so well speak to meguires see what they suggest

Farclea have a specific product for this problem.

It is called Farécla Profile Gel Coat Restorer & Wax.

I have recently acquired a K3 with oxidised gel coat. I have treated it the same as a boat I had many years ago. I used T cut to remove oxidation by hand, a long job. If you wish to cut down the hours use Farecla no. 3 and water on a sponge pad on your drill or grinder (gently) after you have your shine back use wax polish to keep it that way. GRP cars do not like sitting out in all weathers, Much like older painted cars. Do not attempt to coat the gel coat with anything other than wax polish. If you wish to paint it, a last resort, it is similar to doing a bare metal respray on a tin box.

Thanks for the advice I have done some tests and found out the car has never been finished off as all the moulding marks are still there. so I will be using wet and dry, cutting compound and a good polish.

i now have two very shiny patches of bodywork, just got to get down and do the rest.

I am going to use a mini grinder with a foam sponge disc for appication and buffing . I have a speed controller from China , so I can slow it down to any speed, only cost about a fiver, now have a speed controller for any mains tool less than about 2000 watts..... Chinese watts that is.

I will post the before / after pics and a pic of the speed controller, if it survives being used
