So 'George' is now up on axle stands as I'm definitely going to have to take out my fuel tank to get to the faulty pump. I intend to drain and drop the coolant pipes and syphon the fuel from the tank, which should be simple enough.

But what about the gear change cables. Must they be disconnected or is there movement in them to squeeze the tank past?

Also, I presume the tank bolts screw into rivnuts (rather than nuts through the tub), so the seats and carpet can remain intact?

Any other tips would be much appreciated

I pmd sidewinder as he's been through this fun/pain recently :D

Thanks

Hopefully you now have the information you need then. Any other questions shout out.

While you have the tank dropped it would be a good idea to replace the rubber hoses as the Ethanol in modern fuels rots the rubber and will soon be changing from 5% to 10% so will finish them off even quicker. If you have R6 hoses they'll be on their last legs. Don't use anything less than R9, maybe even fully ethanol proof, teflon or suchlike. I used R9 about a year ago and seems ok for now.

I think you will be right & it's the pump, but before you do have you proved the electrics as close as you can get to the pump? WOuld be a shame to drop the tank only to find the pump is okay & that's it's a connector between the pump & relay

Yes, I spent some time checking the basics last night. I found the plug/connector for the pump in the tunnel and proved that I'm getting 12v from the relay. I then powered the line to the pump directly off the battery and sadly no joy... silence :|

Good good, well not good but you know what I mean, you could always just fit another inline pump in & not bother dropping the tank

Better to drop it and see what condition the top is in, mine was well rusty in the sender area which is why my gauge stopped working. Give you an opportunity to check it over and give the tank a good clean and rustproofing overall.

Make sure you get an MPI pump too.

It'll be a common pump type, but i want to make sure that whatever I buy flows enough for the V6. Any recommendations on pressure and flow requirements or is the stock MPI pump adequate?

There are different pumps that will fit depending on the year and engine type, carb/spi/mpi - you want the MPI one.

This is what you are looking to replace, it's not a normal pump you can swap out except for the Rover item which is why I would consider leaving it in place & adding an external pump

Managed to drop the tank and remove the dodgy pump today. I'm finding it difficult to find an identical pump/filter from a trustworthy source. As you say, it needs to be the right pump to fit the housing assembly.

Late 90s Rover 100 1.4 gti MPI looks to be the one. No.s on my pump are 6443327 A0929-1... I'll keep searching.

How would you to connect an external pump to the tank without modifying it? There's no low level connection, only a return in the top.

When I looked at the one I took pictures of earlier I saw that it looked there were 2 small bolts at the side so you can take the pump out. How about removing the pump & extending the pipe down to be at the same length as where the pump would pick up, you might be able to put in into the gauze. Then up in the engine bay away from any heat just plumb in an external 3 Bar pump.

Or if you search for 3 bar pump on Fleecebay you might be able find a comparable unit that you could swap out, if you get desperate to get on the road I can send you this one, but will want it back

Thanks Phaeton, I've bought this pump from Merlin Motorsport, which should do the job.

Yep that looks like the puppy, couple of 4-5mm screws at the side, pull apart, new pump in, screws back, famous last words lol
