Post subject:  Z Cars rear suspension

Hi all,

Some have you may have seen the z cars post in General Discussion but if not, Z cars are up and running again and I've (and Ryan) have been speaking to them to see if they can offer the rear suspension kit for the Libra again.

It seems that they can (they are sorting the jigs out now) and they'd like to get an idea of how many people could potentially be interested.

If anyone else is interested I'd appreciate if you could let them know on 01233 226122 or let me know on here and I can pass it on to them.

Not sure of prices etc yet but the more interested the better the price may be (wishful thinking  )

Yes, I've been emailing Chris back and forth over the past couple of weeks.

I'm going to go for it and Chris is going to come and get my car sometime in January to use as a guinea pig. They have the main jigs and so on but Chris wants to be sure its as good as it can be hence they want to use my car in the flesh.

I'll let you know when I get a price :)

I would try and get a price before giving them your car, it shouldn't be unknown territory for them??

Don't worry we've had that conversation

He did say it should be the same as before (ish) but I'll get confirmation and let you know.

It'll be that at least. :(

I'm very nervous of how rusty my bottom wishbones are though to be honest, they need a bit of welding so god knows whats going on inside the plates - I'll be happy to kill two birds with one stone and have nice fresh upgraded suspension and not have to worry about the condition. Thankfully my front wishbones are in good nick.

Wish it was cheaper of course

Also interested. Even at around the original price.

What are the benefits of the Z Cars suspension?

My suspicion is the Libra/Spider rear suffers from excessive compliance camber - even when in perfect condition. I have been thinking of ways to improve it.

Dudley installed the Z cars suspension on my Spyder two years ago, as far as I know the only Spyder alive with this setup. The car seems to be "stiffer" with less sideways movement in corners compared to Dons "standard" Libra in Lincoln, and less squeeky. Very satisfied with it, even though I needed custom made rims. (Team Dynamics 16"x 7j rim MGF pcd 95.25 offset et20 tyres 205/45/16 front and rear.)

If you old suspension is in poor condition anyway, this is a very good alternative.

There has been a lot on this over the years. It was found there is a varying amount of flex across the rear bulkhead depending on layup thickness. There is also a lot of movement in the rear suspension bushes/balljoints etc. One member even did FEA modelling. A few people added various braces between the arm brackets across the bulkhead. Others have swopped balljoints to rose joints. A couple have even grafted MGF rear subframes in.

I had Z Cars design it as a lightweight solution to all of the problems. Originally it was also to have a new engine frame and shock mounts to stiffen that up and have better gearbox and engine mounts. For various reasons this didn't happen.

Overall I was thrilled with the results. Not only did the handling improve massively but it was much quieter. Finally when the geometry was set it remained set when I drove it down the road! That was a novel thing in a Libra!

I paid significantly more than the £1500 the kits subsequently cost but I guess that's just the way of things. If I had another Libra I certainly would consider having it again as it's only a weekends work to fit it and good value.

Im definitely going ahead with an order for mine and z cars will be collecting my Libra sometime this month as they want to check that everything is ok fitment wise as they haven't made any of these for a while.

It will also be re-engineered to take an MGF rear wheel bearing instead of the ford one originally used (which needed a machined sleeve for the driveshaft a caused a few problems). I'll keep this thread updated when I have more info, including costs.
