Post subject: | Rack Extenders |
Hi chaps, quick question. Does anyone know of an easy source for the Libra rack extensions? Was looking at mine the other day & noticed that one seems to be bent. Not sure how that would happen (not without damaging anything else anyway) but as it's fairly manky & has bent on the threaded portion (smallest csa) then I'd much prefer to replace rather than attempt to straighten. I think they are M12 x 1.25 for both the male & female threads. I could make something but if there is something readily available then I may as well go down that route. Thanks, Stew. |

Morning Stew/All. Did anything arise from this thread? My extenders are seized into the TRE's and I have a feeling they'll snap if I try and force them. I can cut them off of course but I'd much rather have new ones. |

You can get them custom made on eBay; https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2386202.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.XSteering+Rack+Extender.TRS0&_nkw=Steering+Rack+Extender&_sacat=0 J. |

Interesting - thanks for the link. At £33 shipped I think I'll be cutting my old ones out |

You need to have a friend with lathe (and the skills to use it). Amazing what some people can make in their lunch hour at work for the cost of a few beer tokens |

I think I may have a solution to this, following a bit of a dig. M12x1.25 studding and studding connectors are available - though rare. The connector could be drilled from the side and a blob of weld inserted to capture the thread. Has anyone got access to a fastener supply company that might be able to do these? I can only get the connectors in 100s and 1m lengths of stud. This assumes that the studding connectors are long enough to do what we want - although 2 could be welded together then cut down. Can't help with fasteners but might be able to machine you up a pair for the cost of a piece of appropriately sized hex bar (which should be about £6). I can't make any promises until the weekend when I get a chance to check if I've got the correct die for doing the outer thread. I know I've got a tap for the inner assuming I'm remembering correctly that the thread is M10x1.25 |

Good man! Even if it means buying a die for you it'll still be cheaper than £33. Let me know and I'll sort something. Edit: Only going on above comments, the thread is M12x1.25. I might have a tap myself. |

Good spot, I've just been and measured and yes it's M12x1.25. And I've just confirmed Ive got taps and die. |

Hi chaps, been away for a while... I did sort something using 'stock' parts. I used readily available threaded hex 'connectors' & wheel studs! As they are steering related components you really don't want to be using the cream cheese studding! It was all eBay stuff & about £12 all in. Stew |

Pics please Stew! I couldn't get my extenders out of my TREs in the end so I've reused them - they feel tight enough. Obviously I'd rather not get it re-tracked twice in the next few weeks. |

Hold that thought - I might have found a solution. Does anyone know off-hand the length of the extension portion? |

Hmm, Amazing what you can find when you look hard enough. 50mm extension - which I'm guessing is about right - in stainless - £7.99 each on ebay........ https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/282860924268 ... rmvSB=true |

Rack extension is 40mm stainless steel is not normally recommended for steering parts .To make them you need a die and two taps a tapered one and a plug tap to tap the the thread to the bottom of blind hole .Is it worth looking for a track rod end that that has same taper as metro and common 12mm thread but longer so extender is not needed . |

I’m currently rebuilding my front suspension and I’m wondering what the original theory is behind the rack extenders........are they supposed to be an extension of the rack and lock bolted to it or an extension of the tie rod? Either way when building it up the extension is too long on my new rack and fully wound on the wheels are toeing out. My old rack arms have been trimmed down so I quess the idea is to trim the rack arms then lock bolt the extenders to it, the adjustment then happening between the tie rod and extended arm as normal? Would appreciate if someone has a photo. Cheers, Jamie |
