Hello there.

Does anyone know the part number of the temperature sender which matches the ETB/VDO branded temperature gauge and fits the MGF K-series temperature outlet on the engine block ??

Or failing that the thread form of the sensor ?? M10, M12, 3/8NPT etc ??

Just trying to eliminate the possibility of a dodgy gauge before I replace the PRT thermostat !!

Thanks in advance.

Phil.

Hi Phil, my GTM supplied ETB dash gauge works fine/accurately fed from the MG/Rover sensor in the head outlet. Just beware that there are two sensors in the same place. The blue one (facing downwards) is the one for the gauge, the brown one (sometimes black?) that goes out horizontally is for the ECU.

Note that the engine loom (which has connections for the sensors) is spliced into the GTM body loom so there could always be a fault in that connection too.

Phil, a definite case for on board diagnostics. Live data will give engine temperature to within one degree. Far more accurate for diagnosis than dash board instruments, Peter

Hi Peter.

I presume you are using an OBD transmitter and software on your phone ??

Do you have any recommendations for the OBD dongle and software ??

I've used a "Streetwize OBDII Code Reader for Android" (bluetooth and dirt cheap) and torque lite (free).

Phil,
On my GTM I use a Sykes Pickavant ACR 4 with the Rover 1 pod. The management system is the early throttle body injection with the round DLC (Data Link Connector). Being an early system, live data is limited, and I can only monitor one item at a time. However, I can set idle speed and CO.
I expect your car has the later 16 pin DLC. This will definitely run Rover diagnostics, and maybe EOBD (European/Enhanced On Board Diagnostics). These are two parallel systems, the Rover diagnostics giving far more information and facilities than EOBD. Sykes did a Rover 4 pod and the later MAP (Multi Application Pod) that would log a selected four lines of data.
Early diagnostic kit is available at very reasonable prices now as garages constantly upgrade.
I have only ever used dedicated diagnostic scanners, and have no experience of phone based equipment.
Hope this is of help,
Peter
