My 1.4 K series Libra is loosing water -- after short trips the header tank is empty -- no visible signs of a leak, running temp is approx 80C, no apparent sign of water in the oil and compression test shows 180 on all cylinders. The motor had done 32K miles in the donor but seems to run OK otherwise. Also the heater warms up OK.
Could this be the dreaded head gasket even though the compressions are OK or maybe an airlock working its way out of the system?
I'm baffled and not too keen on any long trips until reliability is proven. Anyone any ideas?

Passenger side carpet wet?

Don't fill the expansion tank more than half full.

If your pressure cap hasn't got a white spot on it, get one.

Possibly a little steam at start-up but nothing obvious when it s running.
No wet carpet -- thinking of a leak at the heater box??
Header tank starts 1/2 full and empties down into the rubber pipe
No white dot -- what's special about a white dot cap and where, other than a scrappy, do I get one? My ex-Rover dealer is now a Mitsubishi dealer so Rover parts are limited.

Elise parts sell them or ebay

So you order a new cap from Eliseparts, it arrives 2 days later, fit to the header tank and it stops loosing water -- how neat is that?
Engines aren't my forte so I still don't understand why
Whatever thanks for helping sort the problem.
