Post Hello, looking for a bit of advice!
Hi all,

I'm new here and I guess I'm probably one of the younger members of the forum (21), but I've always loved kit cars and British shed engineering (being bought up by a mum that owned a Jago Jeep until a few years ago definitely helped!), so have started formulating plans to get myself a GTM some point in the next 6 months...

I'm currently on a year work placement so will have a 2-3 month break at this summer before I head back to Uni to get a car in reasonably reliable running state, with plans to have it as my daily driver should everything go to plan!

From doing some research it appears that the general consensus of opinion is that it is hard if not impossible to get an unregistered mk1/2/K3 through the current SVA test, so a car that is already road registered would be the best bet. If this is true, it rules out my original idea buying an unfinished, unregistered project or can it be done?

I like the idea of at some point in the future of taking this car on the track and doing some hill-climbs, so having the potential to add a bit more power would be a bonus, so I guess the K3, with the K series engine and room for a swap would be more suited than a mk1/2?

Also being an automotive engineer by trade, I've doing enough materials modules to work out that fiberglass isn't the most impact resistant material, so will probably end up putting a roll cage, or at least a roll bar/side bar in it and from doing a bit of searching it appears to be quite common to do, but cant seem to find any prices, and whether that chassis needs to be permenantly modified or whether it's possible to bolt on it with only modifications needed to the mounting points?

I hope not too many questions for a first post but I've been formulating this plan for the past few months and got a bit carried away!

Thanks in advance!
Oliver

Hi, If you are going to be competing in a GTM then you will need to have a ROPS which complies with the MSA regulations.
From 2016 all 'specialised production cars' including road legal ones require a roll over bar or cage to the specified drawings and material specs in the MSA blue book.
GTM's are classed as specialised production cars due to their small production figures.

Yeah, I doubt I'll actually compete in this car (username is from my MTB racing), with general road day to day protection being the main point of the roll cage, track days being a possibility at a later stage. I have had a look through the MSA blue book from 2015 and all the specs seem to make sense and would probably be a good base for designing a strong cage whatever it's use.

Also thanks for the offers of cars for sale! I'm currently not looking due to money/space/time constraints but may get back to some of you April/May next year if you haven't sold them!
