Post Unipower in Octane
Interesting to see a Unipower Gt in Octane issue 204, this month. one for Turbocox.
Maybe a Gtm will make it into Octane one day. I regard them as very similar, mini based and from the same era.
The main differance being the Gt was built and not a kit, which is a real stigma in the classic car world.
Keep well.

Very nice little cars, myself and West went years ago to look at one that was for sale just outside Bournemouth I think..?

It sold within a very short time after being advertised on eBay to a chap from Spain. The owner /seller, wasn’t expecting the offer he got.... £22,000

You have to bear in mind this was a good 15 years or so ago, and the car in question hadn’t moved in 20 something years, it was barely holding itself together due to how rusty the chassis was.

I have had a few chats with owners/admirers of Unipower Gt’s, and their ‘seems’ to be the option that they are FAR superior in every aspect to the Cox.

Now as I said they are a nice thing but.... they do suffer as any other car from little issues, such as suspension mounting plate failures (cracking along welds) among others, but the Cox isn’t perfect either.

Comparing the two cars a Cox and a Unipower gt, ride wise the Cox seems to be stiffer, but if you haven’t sorted the rear steer issues on your Cox then this will be a wasted advantage against the Uni on the track.

Performance wise well I would say according to factory specs the Uni gt would be slower, but then again it’s not giving the cooper s performance figures..... so..?

It’s 2 whole kg lighter than the Cox factory figures though.

Ive only been on a track once with a Uni Gt, and it wasn’t fair as the Uni only had a 1275cc standard engine fitted. Still the owner of that car did feel it was his duty to tell me his car wasn’t a kit and how fast his car was and that I wouldn’t ever be able to keep up with him... :?:

Really...

He said to me afterwards well... erm... yes...your car is a bit faster than I thought

But if anyone does have a little Uni gt that they want to offload for free, I’ll come take it off them..

I remember when we went to look at that Unipower. Boy it was tired.

There really is not a lot between a GTM and a Uni when you get into the finer details. One of the surprising things is the wheel base of a GTM is longer! That was something I did not expect. In some respects I would say the Chassis of the GTM was ahead of its time being a monocoque compared to a spaceframe. The Unipower is really a very simple car underneath but well executed.

I also looked at Gerry's Unipower GT the race car, the wide arched yellow one, that was nice.

There was also one that went to nurburgring and was clocked doing insane speeds helped by I think a formula 2 engine which was some weird version of BDA,,,,,, , found it a Cosworth FVA around 1600cc it was the engine before they made an aluminium version which became the BDG it was also used to test some ideas for the DFV!

Thought you would be interested Stuart.
Just got a guide for the Racing Car Showw 1966 when Unipower had a stand. They are offering a Gt and Spyder with hard top.
Don't remember a Spyder.
It was only to be offered in Kit form?
Keep well,
John
