Post chassis number help required
having bought the white ballista that kept cropping up on eblag, the chassis that came with it has no numbers of any kind, i have a donor car with a legitimate chassis number but i assume i cant transfer that onto this new chassis, so how do i go about getting a chassis number?

Just write to DVLA Swansea,

SA99 1ZZ,

Explain what you are doing and they will allocate you a VIN number. You will need to apply for and get the VIN prior to applying for IVA. Its then up to you to get that number stamped on the chassis and also onto a visible plate that MOT testers can see without trying too much once you have passed the IVA.

The plate with number on has to be welded onto chassis on all sides not just tacked on also it has to be on a particular side cannot remember if left or right but I know my P4 chassis which is nicely powder coated is the wrong side

My understanding is that at least one has to be permanently fixed to the chassis and that should be on the offside (drivers side in the UK). It can be stamped into the chassis but if that one is a plate it needs to non-removable. I think that part is open to interpretation by the examiner. Some accept rivets, some will ask for welded all sides. For our chassis-less Libras/Spyders it is riveted to the GRP tub.

The second one is for convenience of MOT testers and the like. That one could be fixed anyway you like but needs to be reasonably visible. If the chassis one is reasonably visible then I guess you could argue that there is no need for a second one.

Sanz I went to an IVA test with a friend with his Tiger and he failed it due to the fact the plate was not welded on all sides

All a bit conflicting but all chassis plates I've looked at on production cars are alli and riveted on, so for a kit car you need a special chassis number plate made in steel to weld it on??

i think the issue is that it needs to be stamped into the chassis or attached in a way that is seen as permanent, so a chassis number that's riveted is only semi permanent, but if you have a plate stamped it needs to be fully welded on if you cant stamp the chassis its self.

see, clear as mud!
