Post Closest match to Rossa Red?
My red Rossa came with an aerosol of Rover Flame Red paint which is a bit darker than the colour of the car - has anybody found anything that is a better match?

It may be worth finding the smallest part of your car and taking it to somewhere like halfrauds. The gelcoat colour can vary from car to car. If you can't find anything close, then see if you can get some paint mixed to that colour.

Are you going for a respray, or just covering some scratches?

I'm just covering some scratches/little bits of stopper/general imperfections etc gathered over 20 years of sitting around waiting for completion :) I believe that some paint places have a spectrum analyser that breaks down the colour and replicates it exactly but there's none near me as far as I know. The gel coat is in excellent condition and buffs up well (it still has the marks of the release agent from the mould on it) but I never thought about the colour varying. Methinks my engine cover will be going for a trip around paint suppliers shortly :) Thanks, Tim.

To keep the gelcoat in top condition, make sure that you don't T cut it. The less wear and tear on it the better. Sounds like if you have still got the release mark, then it should be in good condition.

Good luck with the search. :D

Red pigments are the worst of all for fading. Just look at an old Dutton some time. Even if you could get hold of the actual gel coat pigment it probably wouldn't match after this time. Your best bet is definitely a colour analyser.

I suppose we just get too used to modern cars. My everyday Mazda 3 is a mica red and doesn't even have a colour code, just a name (Velocity Red) - Mazda (and the rest too, probably) have paint mixing down to such a fine art that they can get it exactly the same batch after batch.

Pigment fades in the sunlight - it got worse about 20 years ago when they took the lead out of the pigment. Particularly bad with red pigment. Gell coat is a problem because the thickess varies and fades in a patchey or streaky way. Paint fades but tends to be uniform and can often be cut back with T cut etc.

Keep cars in a dark garage and don't, whatever you do, drive them in strong sunshine

Wings on my 7 were fine till I had two weeks holiday in the south of France

I've done some rubbing down this weekend - and the sunlight has DARKENED the bodywork on the coupe. The area where the badges used to be on the rear panel are bright red - the worst of the sun damage is almost brown.

That's despite being in a dark garage for 17 years with a coating of primer on it

The brown colour is likely to be the untinted resin showing through the gel coat. Unfortunately cellulose paints, primers and thinners can also affect the gel colours too.

I've been doing some research for the book and I've found a couple of Farecla products specifically designed for fibreglass. Not surprisingly they are available from boat suppliers.

There's a gelcoat restorer and a couple of protective waxes.

Have a look here.

I think these are available from Frost as well. As a matter of interest, the nearest paint match I found is Ford Vibrant Red or Performance Red (seem to be the same) but they appear to be American colours although my local paint supplier can mix them into aerosols :D They're not exactly spot on but they're certainly not far away.

My Rossa is BMLH / Rover GPO Red in two pack (it is still about  ). This is an almost identical match
