Dodgy Starter
Hi all, my coupe has an intermittant fault with the starter. Most of the time it turns over quickly and with no probs, but every now and again when I turn the key it doesn't spin. Sometimes if I hold the key in the start position for say 20 secs it will suddenly spin, and other times it just doesn't. If I leave it for 5 mins and try again it usually works fine again. The lights on the dash work ok and as I say when it does spin it spins quickly. I have a new battery and have eliminated a bad earth. I have an A+ engine, the starter with the solonoid sitting on it's back... I got the starter from ebay, don't know how old it is.
Anyone else had this..?

Re: Dodgy Starter
Two possible scenarios, assuming not bad earth (which is the most likely)
You hear the solenoid go Click - duff motor.
The solenoid does not click - duff solenoid.

Re: Dodgy Starter
Good point, and come to think of it there is no click when it happens.... I thought I had eliminated a bad earth by carrying around a thick earthing cable in the boot and connecting it directly to the battery one end and to the block the other when it happened... I couldn't attach it directly to the starter body but did bolt it to the block quite close but it still didn't work. This led me to believe it was something else but that might just be wishful thinking...
Can you clean a solenoid...?
