Post HID Headlights
Been looking at fitting a set of HID lamps to my Libra which has the first generation front end.
Are the kits legal I have seen kits where you put just lamps into your current headlamp and also kits with all new projector units.
Standard lamp type

With new projectors

Thanks Matty

Technically after market HID conversions are illegal -- the EU regs state that any HID system should have wash/wipe and a system to automatically level the lamps -- usually a system on the rear suspension that senses the attitude of the vehicle and operates a small motor on the headlamp to level it up. In reallity I think its down to your MoT man and if your lamps are correctly aligned you'll probably be OK -- best to check before shelling out the cash.

Most of the dazzle merchants out on the road seem to be hi spec Mercs etc that have an auto system but it doesn't seem to be work that well in practice.

from a discussion on another forum but the information is a little poor out there but from what i understood.

It is illegal fit an aftermarket kit if the car came with an option of HID, and requires wash and self leveling, but if the car never had them as an option you can retro fit them wihout these systems.

It is a minefield and not very clear with what apears to be many loopholes.

Many people do fit aftermarket kits and not have a problem. My advice is be sensible, MOT testers can fail you on the colour of the bulbs as this is more of an issue than HID some bulbs are ridiculous and are purple i.e 8000K rating, 5000K is white and about maxiumum light output, 6000K is starting to go blue and shortly after this light output starts to drop quickly the more purple/blue it gets.

I've got one on my Moto Guzzi.

I fitted it because the current draw is much less than a 60w filament bulb and the Guzzi charging system is marginal at best but as a bonus the light output is tremendous too.
