Post New GTM Owner!
I have just bought a 89 GTM here in Canada. I am now the owner of GTM Coupe, Q268 OCR, chassis no. 292C, which I purchased from Dan in Canada who bought the car from Mike Cam advertised on the forum. I think the car is pretty much as it was when it was shipped over years ago, so I will have to trailer it approx 2700km (1700miles) to get it home. I may start asking some questions as I will be redoing the car and have no documentation on the build. I have many years of Minis and VTEC Mini builds and ownership, so mechanical stuff is not the issue. I have been through a lot of this forum and there are some great cars and great build threads. My car is below...

Couldn't figure out how to get the photo to show from Picassa..
Anyone have a build document for the later GTM cars? Thanks MiniMike

hello and welcome.

I have fixed your pic for you  using the Img tags.

I remember looking through you Mini Vtec builds when I was converting my GTM to Honda power, some nice builds.

Neil

Thanks for the welcome and the fix to the picture. I am looking forward to getting the car home and starting to work on it, although I am in the middle of a Van rebuild with a VTEC conversion, so I'll have to see how far along I am with that. You have done a great job Neil on your conversion for the GTM, has it impacted at all on the front to rear balance of the car? You also have a thread on the 16vMini site?

Ken.. thanks so much for the manual.. I will find this most useful! It seems red was the color of choice for these cars... were they all the same shade or were there assorted hues?

The hue depends on the age :D , i.e the gel coat faded badly so no two cars are the same colour by now :!:

Well I have been busy getting the GTM roadworthy so it will pass inspection. I have replaced all the water hoses for the cooling, all rubber gas lines, rubber brake lines, wheel cylinders, brake shoes, rear brake hubs, with the spaced drums, new wheel studs, rear wheel bearing, tie bar rubbers (nasty time with this as the 5/16 bolt on the lower arms were all rusted solidy in place!). I have rebuild the wiper assembly, replaced the fuse box, the window washer setup, rewired the front lights to Canadian standards, replaced the water pump, flushed the fuel system and cleaned the floatbowl and fuel lines, fixed the fuel pump... so now the car is running and drivable.. but I need to install a center brake light and daytime running lights before it can be inspected.. and replace the window felt as the windows will not move Then i can drive it to figure out what else need doing. Phew... probably missed a few thing in the list...

Well, not good news.. the car has copper brake lines..not legal here, so I will have to replace them all with steel lines approved for BC.. a few other small items mostly Lucas electrics that worked at home, but not at the shop.. so it's back home now and I'll be tearing out all the old copper lines and redoing them..

Also speedo stopped working.. cable and speedometer is good, as it works with a drill on the end, but I suspect it's not seating into the drive properly.. any one had this issue. The end of the speedo cable looks like a flattened cable, not a square drive end... is something missing, or was this what was used? Why does this stuff stop working during the inspection??

Mike..back in the garage....or complaining about the results with a few beer!

The speedo is probably down to the drive gear in the box. The plastic gear has a metal tube in it and the end of that tube is swaged into a square for the cable to engage with it's not uncommon for that square to split at the corners and open up enough that the cable can spin inside it.

The end of the cable - some are manufactured square and some are manufactured eliptical. Whether yours was made like that or whether it's one that someone made in his shed is anyone's guess - it it looks nice and neat then it's probably a pro made one but if it looks eneven it's more likely home-made. In the GTM they need to be quite long so I think they were one of the specially made parts rather than an off-the-shelf part from another car (but I stand to be corrected if this isn't the case).

Thanks Iain, pulled the gear assembly off the car, and the square end was OK, so filed the cable to fit as it looked like it had the end snapped off... now fits back together and seems to work... another thing out of the way!

Well more progress, got side marker lights now, high beams working, reverse lights working, all old brake lines ripped out, and new rubber hoses installed.. while everything is apart, I am cleaning sanding and painting the front sub frame..changing the diff seals (the GTM was marking it's spot with two nice drips, one from each axle).. hopefully this weekend I can finish the brake lines, and then i just need to wait for the rear tie rod ends to come from Alan.. then back for another inspection.. closer each day to driving it!!
