Post Oil cooler mounting
Hi All, Can you hang an oil cooler upside down ?
(ie with the pipes down at the bottom)

What about air locks in it?

Alex

It'd retain air and not work very well unless you filled it the right way up and then fitted it.

It wouldn't "air lock", it'd just only cool along the bottom portion.

I don't know

but if your struggling for space, what about a Laminova oil/water cooler?

You get significantly less oil pressure drop through one of these.

Gtm owner is just right.

You may fitt some kind of "valve" to bleed the oil cooler though.

On a personal level i'd be wary of mounting it upside down, even if there was a facility to bleed it any tiny air bubbles in the oil (like you see when you pour new oil) would collect at the top. Can't see any probs mounting the cooler on its end though provided the pipes were the right way round (bottom in, top out) If it's an A series and space is an issue why not fit an oil/water heat exchanger as fitted to some Metro engines, surprisingly efficient + the oil gets up to temp quickly.
