Post Alternator fitting
Do most of you guys have an alternator or stuck with a dynamo?

There isn't either in mine, i guess the previous owner couldn't decide.

I think i know the answer to this but i dont want to be right.... Do i have to cut out of the panel behind the passenger seat to fit an alternator? It doesnt look like it would fit otherwise :(

Does anyone have any pics of their setup?

Alternator every time! If you still have the mini/metro engine it will fit but make sure the top engine steady is good or the alternator will chap on the bulkhead and slacken off the belt!

Alex

Im not surprised it chaps, i really didnt think it would fit! I do need to renew the top steady bushes actually, is it a special part or is it from something else?

Thats good news though because my dad has got a metro alternator in the attic somewhere :)

Ta for the quick reply!

I seem to recall that my alternator was fairly close to the bulkhead (engine is currently out so I can't check).
Probably not much sway space for adjustment if belt stretches.
You could always use a small Denso type alternator of a Birse or Lynx-AE competition alternator.

Is there any issue with power differences on different alternators from different vehicles? Or is it just a matter of chucking them in? I guess theyre all feeding a 12v system so cant be that much of a difference.

The Metro is a 45A (Amp) unit, so along as the replacement is equal or greater than this you will be ok.

I fitted one from a Proton Persona, 60A and a lot smaller.

I use an 11AC Lucas, which is BIG, though it fits. Use as short belt as possible to keep the alternator away from the bulkhead.
