Post Location of chassis number
Hello there, I'm pretty much new to the forum although have been reading stuff on here for quite some time.

My father and I have recently got my Coupe back on the road after 12 years of it sitting in the garage.
We had a few problems getting it MOT'ed as the computer system wouldn't accept a chassis number with less than 6 characters and in the car history it's down as 64B. The computer eventually accepted GTM64B as the number.

Having never found the chassis number anywhere I was wondering where the standard location of it should be?... if there is a 'standard' location. I'm assuming that the tubs were stamped back in the 80's by GTM?? Should there be any more letters to the chassis number or is a number and a letter the standard format? I always believed that it was the build number followed by the specification of the kit A, B or C.

If anyone can shed any more light on this matter I would be most grateful as the DVLA now want to know why there's a discrepancy between the V5C/chassis number and the MOT certificate.

Hi,
The 80's onwards GTM Coupes had a chassis plate and it will have a short number such as 64B.
(64B sounds like an early Peter & Paddy chassis number).

You should also have a vin plate fitted which would have a vin number allocated on first registration.
The vin number is typically 17 digits long.

I think you should get a vin plate stamped up with the vin number from the log book and attach it to your chassis.

You may however have opened a can-of-worms by quoting the wrong number to the MOT station and attracted unwanted attention to your car.

Hopefully you have other supporting documentation i.e. old MOT's and tax discs.

Surprised that the testing centre couldn't enter the Vin number as 3 digits.

I had the new "Electronic" test done after a long time off-road, 2 years ago, on a 3 digit number.
Just had to produce the V5 to show tester.

Hi there, thanks for your reply. Unfortunately the old logbook never had a vin number, just the 64B chassis number. The car is definitely an old Peter and Paddy car as it was built around 1982.
Where would the chassis plate normally have been located? I suppose it could still be on the car somewhere but not easily visible.

Hi Ken, yes i was surprised also. I think they need to reconfigure their Siemens testing system but the tester didn't have the knowledge to do so and so has caused us a load of hassle now.

Thanks turbocox, I'll have to ask Andy if he still has the autocad file for the plate. I may be able to get one made at work.

Assuming my car still has one of these plates, where would it normally be located?

Or indeed, which components to fit.

Got the issue with the DVLA sorted eventually. They sent me a new MOT certificate with the correct chassis number.

Thanks to Andy I now also have a new chassis plate on the car :)
