Post Sprint/Hillclimb Class for GTM's
Hi all,

I am new to this forum, and will be a fully paid up member in the very near future.

I didn't if this would be something you would be interested in.

My day job is as the Technical & Motorsport Manager for Toyo Tires and we work with WSC and the owners club.

During a recent (non work related) conversation I had with Nick Algar(competitions secretary of the owners club), I said as GTM were part of Potenza/Westfield could GTM's compete in the Speed Series (I competed in my Spyder at their Curborough event back in the summmer, great fun, even though I spun twice, didn't stop smiling for days :D ). The WSCC thought this was a good idea and would be pleased to invite GTM's compete in class J (invitation class) and if more than 5 cars register/compete they will create a GTM sub class with an award at the end of the year.

You can see the regs at this link:

http://www.wscc.co.uk/managed/SpeedSeri ... e1-Draught).pdf

They are a great bunch of people and my Spyder attracted a lot of attention.

What do you think ?

Best regards

Alan

I've just purchased my Non Race National B and have been talking to Shenston & DCC about running in the Curborough championship - unfortunately at the moment they are wanting me to run in Class 2a which my 1275 Coupe will struggle in since it will be up against much faster hardware as the engine limit is 1700. They have suggested I could run in the classic 8a class

So yes I'd be interested if I'm up against similar hardware

We could ask for a GTM class at the Curborough championship - it's only 10 miles from me so very convenient to pop over for a quick (or slow) sprint every month or so.

Extract from the reg:

RoadgoingKit, Replica, and Space framed Cars .
2 2a <1700cc
2b 1701cc and over
In classes 2a and 2b only: tyres must conform to list 1A or 1B of the MSA Technical
Regulations 2011and be of Radial type construction.
Cars running in the Road Going classes must conform to the regulations for Roadgoing
Series Production Cars defined in the 2011MSA Technical Regulations section S11, with the
following amendments:
Cars must be taxed, insured, MOT’d where applicable ( all vehicle documentsmust be made
available for inspection ).
A full sized windscreen( a single windscreen the full width of the car and with a minimum
glass measurement of 235mm between the top and bottom frames of the windscreen) must be
fitted in the standard position.
Internal engine, & gear ratio modifications are free. Carbon Brakes are not permitted.
Manufacturers fitment A.B.S systems may be removed.
Suspension pickup points & damper location must remain std, anti roll bars may be uprated.
The bonnet and bootlid may be replaced by versions in other materials but all other bodywork
must be of the original material. Wheelarch extensions are permitted, but the original wheel
arch may not be modified.
In Class 2a, and 2b the air intake filter may protrude beyondthe silhouette of the car
In the event of an unresolved eligibility problem the driver of a car may be asked to produce a
manufacturer’s catalogue within four weeks of the event to substantiateany query and allow
championship points to stand.
Exhaust systems must be fitted with catalytic converters if the vehicle requires one to be able
to obtain an MOT for it’s year of production.

The only problem the Coupe is going to have is complying with need for rear stays on the rollbar......

Hi Guys,

Sorry for not replying sooner.

If you are interested in competeing in WSCC club speed series I suggest you contact Nick Algar at Plays Kool Motorsport 0845 6806812

www.plays-kool.co.uk

If enough of us sign up we will get a GTM class.

The speed series holds events all over the UK so their should be venues to suit everybody. The regs say you have to be registerd by the 25th February.

I hope to be at Stoneleigh, see you there.

Best regards

Alan

Hi Guys,

Just a quick update.

Nick at WSCC is happy to extend the closing date for entering the speed series if any of you are considering it, also if you have any concerns over your cars eligibility then you should be able to contact a local MSA scutineer to have a look at your car.

The link below should take you to the relivant MSA page

I'm interested but there is no way I can do 29 rounds! Do you think WSCC would run a reduced number of events for GTM's?

Maybe at the Curborough, MIRA, Loton and Shelsley rounds?

Post Re: Sprint/Hillclimb Class for GTM's
Hi Alan,

Great to see you whipping up support for speed events. When we first built up our coupe in '88 there was huge interest in hillclimbing in the South West, we were regularly competing against other coupes, marcos, davrian etc in the under 1400cc class at Wiscombe, Oddicombe, Werrington and Cricket St. Thomas and it was great fun. We left the scene in '92, but returned in 2008 to find we were competing against just one Marcos in the same class. Then the organising body tried to merge our class with the one above which would have put us up against 1.6 and 1.8 litre Westfields. Luckily, our protests were listened to and the class was retained, but we desperately need more competitors to keep it viable. The point is that it so much more fun competing against similar machinery. To my knowledge, the ASWMC is the only association offering a class for road-going specialist production cars under 1400cc, ideal for A series and K series GTMs. Your idea of a class just for GTMs is excellent, but again smaller engined cars may be put off if they're up against more powerful competition. In my experience it's the engine capacity limit that's important (and, when up against other marques, also offers the chance to prove that GTM is the best kit!). So, a suitable class and championship already exists, and if we don't use it we will lose it. The snag is that some venues may be too far away for you (3 are in Cornwall), but Charmouth, Wiscombe (Honiton) and Mamhead (Exeter) could be feasible and they are reviving the beautiful Dyrham Park (Bristol) hillclimb in October. If you do ever manage to secure a GTM class at Shelsley, Loton or particularly Prescott I would be seriously interested as these are not on the ASWMC circuit.

Good luck with your plans - and by the way, any chance of persuading Toyo to produce the excellent R888 in 175/50/13 format?

Hi David,

The speed series has 29 rounds but only your best 10 (or 8 if you are a novice) count towards the end of year awards. You don't have to do them all. The reason for the 29 is so you can pick the ones and how many you want to do.

Unfortunately Toyo won't be producing any 175/50R13, I have looked into this before, the return on investment does not add up.

I used to sprint and hillclimb in ASWMC championship in the late 90's in a Mini and I know Mike Potter (Bridge Tyres) quite well. Finlake was a great venue.

I understand the engine size issue but first of all we need to get enough cars to get the class started. I suppose it would be possible to introduce a handicap system, but we would need to speak to the WSCC about that.

Works for me - I've not signed up for Curborough yet and given that I'm doing it for fun I would rather be up against similar spec machinery.

Has anyone got an answer about this point below :?:

Mr Mac wrote:

As I remember to conform to this regulation, the rear brace bars, going rearward off of the rollhoop, would need to pass through the rear bodywork to pass scrutineering.

I sure we have discussed this before :?:

I'd love to join in but can't this year (Just moved house)
