Post Exhaust Manifold
Hi All
I'm looking for some info on the exhaust manifold used on the Coupe - mine is a 3 into 1 with a 90 degree bend to the offside shortly after - similar to the old mg/wolseley/riley 1100/1300 in design. The problem is that I have a MED 1380 engine and this manifold is stifling it! It needs to match the shape as I have a custom exhaust and needs to be at least 1.75" in diameter, preferably 2". I'm completely baffled as to where this manifold has come from, and what I can replace it with, so any help would be really appreciated! Even if you can recommend a complete system change to suit I would be grateful as at present I don't know what would fit in - does a normal Mini LCB work?
Many thanks
Barny.

Barny,
Have a search on this site and i think you'll find a couple of options, basically they are modded Mini items, but not difficult to do

You may be disappointed with 2", probably better to stay with 1.75" :)

Sounds the same as mine! So glad to know it'll be too small for my 1380 too :?

It's the early Cooper (Riley Elf/Wolesley Hornet) type 3 into 1 mechanically bent at the bottom - they clash with mechanical fuel pumps.

Bear in mind that the LCB system works well because of the siamese port system of the A-series - so if butchering one, you need to keep the pipe lengths the same before you go into the y section. Might be better to just go for a larger 3 into 1. I also agree that 2" may be a bit big - a slightly smaller bore keeps the gas speed up and aids scavenging.

Great, thanks guys much appreciated. I've always heard that 2" is too big for A series engines - i obeyed that law when doing up a 998 mini, but thought it needed the extra size for a larger capacity engine? I'm happy to go with a 1.75" though as I'm sure they'll be easier to come by!
Tim - by this site, did you mean the forum? Before I posted I had a good scout through all the posts and couldn't find any discussions on it, maybe you could point me in the right direction?
Many thanks again
Barny

Barny,

Go to the search area and search "Maniflow". This'll give you the best pics we've had on here. :D

Spot on, many thanks. I have just found this which seems to match my manifold perfectly:

Now to find a supplier in the UK!

Thanks again

Of course! Midgets are in-line engined! I'm feeling really thick now.

The only problem being they seem to be expensive for manifolds.

Try Maniflow online, or Osselli - they appear to do them too.

I'm just off to talk to a friend of a friend who races Midgets to see what he's got knocking around......

Living up to the terrible tims tag i see :P :P

as others have suggested there has been a thread recently about maniflows, and even i put a picture of my old Mini Maniflow LCB suitably modded for fitment to my coupe back in the day of A series power

A mini lcb is alot cheaper than a midget/sprite one,, well they use to be

Avonbar sell the maniflow manifolds that you can modify and they seem to be a reasonable price. Looking at the pictures one of them seem to have the flared center pipe too.

Post Re: Exhaust Manifold
I have a MED 1430 Full Race unit in my Coupe and I have modified a Maniflow LM05 LCB to suit mine, basically its exactly the same however I took 2" off each pipe to lift it up at the bottom so it couldn't be seen from the back of the car, it now sits tight to the bottom of a STD mini subframe. LM05 is as big as you want to go with an A series engine as you will suffer to much loss in back pressure due to the exhaust outlet pipes being much shorter than that originally on a mini. (i.e. length lost from running engine in back). At the Y piece I also modified this to suit my setup, it was shortened to allow a long radius 90deg bend to the left then another 180deg up and in to the muffler 2" straight through then exits out on the drivers side. I'm still working on it but once completed I will attach a photo.

:P :P :P That even made me laugh in the office!!!!!

But I can trump it: (Apologies for the slightly off topic)

BENEFIT
If I owned a Midget

Life's got me mad, but if I had a midget I’d be glad
to watch him jump around on my Nintendo power pad
he'd have a big head, short legs and long torso
the name that I’d give my pet midget is little Gordo
I’d teach him tricks like back flips and side kicks
when company came over he'd perform and get tips

while I’m eatin' at night
in the kitchen he'd be able
to get the food scraps that I threw under the table
if my midget was ever bad
and acted enraged
then I’d take him to the bathroom
and put him in his cage
but if he kept actin' up and really made me sick
I’d hang him upside down
and poke him with a stick
Little Gordo
would be good, mosta the time though
he'd like to wear a helmet and run around yelling "hiyo"

I’d take im for walks in the park on the weekends
and if he saw other midgets he'd say "can we be friends?"
he'd only need a 3 foot coffin when he was dead
and he be in the Guinness book for the worlds biggest head
what a funny little fellow
but don’t call him a shrimp
or he'll attack your legs
cuz Gordo's a tough gimp!

he'd have a pogo ball that he'd bounce on for hours
and dirty little fat head Gordo wouldn’t take showers
when halloween came
he wouldn’t be a chump
gettin' all the candy goin' around as a tree stump

(like a midget at a urinal... I’m gonna have to stay on my toes)

sometimes my friends would chase Gordo with a gun
it'd be fun
because midgets wobble when they run
they're so close to the ground
and so easy to kick
they're so slow in the head
and so easy to trick

Gordo could do somersaults
his special thing
at the fair I would make him enter mud wrestling
sometimes he wears stilts
and pretend to be tall
so I’d kick him over
and then I’d laugh at him fall

silly little Gordo
just be yourself
I’d put wood on his head
and he'd just be a shelf
he'd do funny little dances
but that’s irrelevant
at the beach Gordo got attacked by pelicans
he had a girlfriend once
but she was an ogre
it didn’t last long cuz he couldn’t f*ck her sober
Gordo had a problem
Gordo wet the bed
so I’d make him wear diapers on his ass and his head
he'd have to clean up his own cage himself
and if he lost a little weight he'd be a keibbler elf
he'd really be somethin'
my mangled little munchkin
plus his head would be larger
than any big pumpkin
this perfect little fool would make a perfect foot stool
sometimes I’d kick him in the head and say "BITCH BE COOL"
I’d have a great life
I’d be happy I know
if I only owned a pet midget named Gordo

It is Friday :P :P :P :P :P

Wow, awesome manifold advice AND a crazy limmerick about a midget. It [i]must[i] be friday.

As my system already seems to have a sprite manifold and my welding skills are non-existent, I think it's going to be best for me to get a sprite replacement, and just suffer the cost - gutting as it is to say it!! Unless Pantera's midget racing friend has a solution............!

I thought that the LCB's made for the inline Spridget type engines wouldn't fit to Mini derivatives as the fouled on the diff casing? Is this just an evil rumour?

Post Re: Exhaust Manifold
Here’s what I found out about exhausts etc from the Midget racing dude.

Maniflow are probably the best, but Midget one will probably hit the diff casing – so if we’ve got to cut and shut, we might as well use the much cheaper Mini LCB to start with.

He’s not sure that 2” exhaust would be too big, but it depends on the head being used. 1.75” or 1 7/8 is probably the size to go for – along with an RC40 back box.
