FOR SALE - 1970 GTM COUPÉ also known as KERMIT


I have for sale my GTM Coupé which I have owned for nearly 4 years. It was originally a 10 inch wheel coupé that over time has been transformed into something else!
I bought it from two guys (father and son) who had built it into a motorbike (Kawasaki 1200cc ZXR) engined car to be used for tarmac stage rallying. In common with many good plans it foundered when motorbike engined cars were banned from tarmac stage rallies before the car was finished. So they used it on the road.
It now has 13 inch wheels on Escort RS Turbo hubs and brakes with coil over shock absorbers at each corner. It has been spaceframed at the back and the rear bodywork comes off in one piece.
It has a V5 registration document and when I bought it it had a current MOT although that has long since expired and the car is on SORN. It aIso now has an MSA competition logbook.
I have never driven it on the road. To get another MOT I feel that in addition to refitting the lights the hydraulic hand brake may need changing for a mechanical system, but I don’t really know that.
I bought it to replace the other GTM I had which had a 1600cc twin cam Honda car engine but the power to weight ratio was all wrong for sprinting and hill climbing which is what I do.
From Kermit I stripped off the lights, passenger seat etc and set about competing. It was much quicker than the previous car but inevitably - in common with most competitors - I felt I needed more power. We had a specialist fit a turbocharger to it and things got even better until we had an engine failure.
We have since had the engine rebuilt by a motorbike specialist race engine builder and had the turbocharger checked out by the manufacturer/supplier. We fitted a new tank on the dry sump system. The engine rebuild included Carrillo con rods, Wossner forged pistons, a reduced compression ratio and a specialist rebuilt cylinder head all to pay respect to the turbocharger. I have invoices and receipts for all of the money I have spent on this car.
A couple of weeks ago we took the car down to PDQ to put it on their rolling road. With mild boost (circa 6lbs/sq ft) it produced 201 bhp at the back wheels and 115ft lbs of torque. This gives approximately 335 bhp/tonne at the wheels. Further adjustments at the turbocharger and possibly with the injectors may improve this dramatically.
While all of this has been going on I bought a Radical PR6 so now, my wife tells me, Kermit is surplus to my requirements. I have invested a lot of money in this car. You can use it on trackdays, for sprinting and hillcimbing or on the road.
I am six feet tall and I find it a bit difficult for height in the cabin, particularly with a crash helmet so I guess really tall people may not suit it unless you can modify the floor or the cabin roof, both of which are easy.
I am looking for circa £8000 for this car (considerably less than my investment!) and it can be seen by appointment in the West Midlands.
