Anyone know how much throw the clutch slave should give? Mine only seems to move by about 20mm when the clutch pedal is fully pressed. Now I've started my engine I've found I can't engage any gears whilst the engine is running. My thoughts are that either the clutch cylinder needs bleeding (but not sure why it would as I only unbolted it from the R65 bracket and bolted it to the PG1 bracket without disconnecting the flexi hose.) Other possibility is the clutch plate is stuck to the flywheel or pressure plate - its been stood for so long that this is a distinct possibility. Might try starting it in gear whilst the back wheels are off the ground, get some momentum in the wheels then dab the brakes whilst the clutch pedal is home? Alternatively just starting it in gear with the clutch in and handbrake on? I'm thinking the former would give more off a snatch on the stuck clutch plate and no risk of overloading the starter motor?

The throw does not sound unreasonable, can you feel the spring of the clutch fighting back at all when you press the pedal.

From what you describe I would had thought the clutch plate may be stuck to the flywheel.

When ever I have had to free one from the car is usually in storage so charge the battery up, foot hard on the brakes clutch down and give the starter a quick flick. As long as you do a quick flick then off it should not do any harm to the motor etc. Plus the clutch has a sprung hub so that will take out the immediate shock slightly.

Hi Neil,
The feel at the clutch pedal is normal. Certainly doesn't just sink to the floor and pumping doesn't make any difference. I'm not sure you would feel it being spongy like brakes do when they need bleeding though.

I'll try the starter motor version of freeing the clutch first then!

Sounds sensible on the clutch.

Mine you can feel the spring of the pressure plate, it is an uprated/heavier than standard cover for the nitrous tho, hence why I can feel what is going on.

I would start with bleeding the slave.

My experience with the slave on the PG1 is that the travel is only just enough and a tiny bit of air will be enough to stop you selecting a gear.

To get a good clutch action I ended up making a small modification to pedal.

This was a fix recommended by Dudley at Talon many years ago and worked very well.

So, managed to get over to the car for the first time in a while. It was just the clutch stuck. Actually freed really easily with just the starter motor (in gear, clutch in, brakes on). All the gears engage fine now so 20mm of stroke on the slave is fine. I will bleed it some time soon though as I'm intending to change all the brake fluid so I'll hardly notice one extra nipple!

That means my car is now ready to drive again. Typically it is pouring with rain though so its maiden drive with its new bits will have to wait - hope not too many bits fall off during the trial run...

I used a pressure bleeder to do my clutch and I found giving the piston rod on the slave a wee wiggle and a nudge displaced quite a big bubble of air.... :wink:
