Post Tidying engine bay
One of the things I would like to do to the car this year is to tidy and declutter the engine bay a bit. There seems to be a lot of pipe work going on in here. How easy is it to ditch the charcoal canisters? Does anyone have a simple coolant pipe diagram?

Hi
Tricky to get rid of any pipes when you have a heater as well, out of interest, what did that expansion tank come from?

This was my engine bay.

It's as tidy as I could make it considering that there's a Laminova oil/water intercooler, a Davies Craig electric water pump and the rocker arms and spring dampers for the pushrod rear suspension in there too.

I'm not sure about the expansion tank i'm afraid, it was already fitted when I bought the car.

That's the MPi Mini expansion tank. You can buy them new from Minispares.

You've basically got an MPi cooling system like this:

There are no charcoal canisters in your car you just have breather canisters. It looks like one is on the timing chain cover and the other on the flywheel housing. The 'canisters' are just filled with wire wool to help filter out the oil from the fumes and let it drip back into the engine. They both join together at the right hand side and are fed into the carb. This is good for emissions but not essential. You could do away with the pipes and let them vent to atmosphere - it's normal to fit a little filter on the end of the canisters like this. Just make sure you then block off the hole in the carb.

You could also consider loosing the oil cooler. If you've got a front mounted radiator and you use good (semi-synthetic) oil, do you really need one?

I certainly did on mine.

The oil pressure used to drop alarmingly on tickover after a good run but once I'd fitted the laminova cooler it cured the problem instantly.

Do you guys think the GTM maybe needs more oil cooling than the mini? Perhaps due to the lower airflow over the sump?
We haven’t had our coupe on the road yet but my historic rally mini with 120hp ran reasonable oil temperatures on events without a cooler as long as the water cooling was up to scratch.
I have actually fitted a cooler now but sometimes struggle to get the oil hot enough!

Did you fit a thermostat?

An additional advantage of the Laminova intercooler is that the oil warms up quickly as it is heated by the engine coolant so no thermostat is needed.

........and of course no airflow needs to be provided for it to work so it can be mounted anywhere that's convenient.

That Laminova does seem like a good idea if you need it. I sometimes wonder if an air to oil cooler is very effective in the engine bay of a GTM coupe where there’s no airflow. That’s why I think removing it from the above car would make little difference.

In my old Cox I had a NACA duct in the R-H side feeding air through the oil cooler and out of the engine cover, in the Kano Coupe I have fitted a laminover oil cooler, think that with our hot climate it would be a better way to go and ducted air from both sides to the Webber air box.

I have the laminova water to oil cooler as standard fit on a TVR Tuscan albeit it is also dry slumped the problem is with no oil thermostat on a cold day getting straight onto the A14 it takes 20 miles to get the oil to 60 deg C
