What height is the tallest radiator that can be comfortably fitted in the front of a Coupe without major mods?

I've got a VW Golf GTI radiator in mine, not sure exactly what size but that fits.

Andy. which one? there are several different sizes, mk1/2, mk3 and mk4. I need to squeeze in 2 radiators, the main one and an extra to cool the charge- cooler water

Not sure but I will find out, I would say its a late model one, why 2 radiators, the Golf one is verry very good, I have actually had to blank off a section to allow it to get to temperature. I haven't even had to use the fan yet, even on run up in the garage it doesn't come on.

Tim is planning on fitting a turbo engine and using a water charger cooler hence the second rad.

Tim certainly a late slim line metro rad fits and does a good job of cooling i use to run one of these years ago when a series powered, the Allegro 1500 rad i had when i was 1600 honda did a good job only starting to struggle on 20 minute track day sessions, the 1750 one is better due to more cores, the current rad i have does an excellant job ill have to find the part numbers but its from a vauxhall corsa turbo diesel combi van i found someone that did alluminium versions with plastic end caps, so far it has done an excellant job. The only time i have started to show concern over its capibilites is when i have been running lots of times in succesion up the drag strip on very hot summer days. and really pushing the limits, i.e large shots of nitrous and then sitting in the fire up lane heat soaking.

it may be from a diesel but i guess its as big as it is due to the van being turbo diesel and having an intercooler in blocking some of it.

its very simular size to an allegro rad

Neil, i looked at the Combi van rad as we have one here on the farm and thought it was a good candidate as you have proved, i also looked at the rad in our old Maestro diesel I'd rather use a long thin pre-rad and put it underneath the main one as opposed to mounting one in front of the other, hence i need to know how much height is available and my body/tub are seperate at the moment

I have what I think is a Maestro rad in mine, it's 285mm high (by 500 wide, not inc. the tanks) and fits just about perfectly inside the subframe.
It would be possible to gain a bit more height, if you needed it, by dropping the bottom down further but that would start to restrict the ground clearance.
It's the same size as a Valeo 730175.

you may struggle to find a long thin rad, one idea i have had for the chargecooler how about a long oil cooler rad you should be able to get one of these off the shelf that is long, but not too tall as too block off the main rad

Been brain storming off and on a few different approaches to sorting out charge coolers/intercoolers myself and also how to get a cold air feed into the rear of mine as was seeing very high intake temps at the drags this summer.

One of my mates has added two small radiators to his car (not a GTM), either side of the main radiator, in front of the wheels They are heater matrices, so use relatively small pipes, but I would have thought if the air was ducted through them properly would give a good flow.

yes i had the idea of oil coolers, and i know you suggested them too but you were talking about using two coolers not one long one
