Post Loss of drive
Carried on from the Heated windscreen thread to avoid hijacking.

Yeah those are the areas I checked, all pins seemed fine and the linkage operated fine all the way into the gearbox, even selected the gears via the shaft that comes out of the gearbox and some mole grips, sounds like they click into place fine but still nothing. Because of this it made me think clutch somehow stuck open? Engine revs but no drive, would you be able to tell if anything was wrong with the clutch from the feeling of the clutch pedal? Clutch pedal felt fine and no loss of fluid. Or should I possibly have been looking towards the driveshafts?

Cheers for the ideas all.

Trap.

Could be clutch stuck open - it happened to me earlier this year. Just take a look at the big nuts in the middle of the wok - if they are close up to the casing, its stuck open.

Otherwise, could be blown clutch, knacked diff, or splines gone on a driveshaft.

How did it fail?
As in: was it working when you put it away...and then not when you came back to it?
Or did it go bang, pop, thud ..or whatever as you were driving?
Did it feel 'funny' at all before it failed?

Was at a Junction, selected 1st gear, let the clutch pedal out and revs but no drive. No odd noises or memerable incidents before hand. Memorable incident of lying in the snow trying to figure out what had gone wrong afterwards tho. Cheers for the sugestions guys, am in the frustrating situation of not being able to see the car now for a few weeks so will have to check everything over when I get back. The garage that its at having the windscreen wired in said they will wack it on a ramp and check I havnt missed anything obvious.

Not much help to you I know but all 4 drive shaft joints were new as was the entire clutch and release system. The gearbox was a rebuilt unit.

yuck, not good!
A possible thought: not wishing to be rude, but do you keep it clean/lubed - could it be a build up of salt/crud on the release mechanism and the clutch lever has stuck.

Thats probably the problem, I have bad luck with new parts! haha Usualy with recieving something completely different to what iv ordered tho.

Not rude at all Dino, every suggestion is a help. Couldnt see any obvious build up or Toffee, while not imaculate I do keep everything clean on the car and everything looks nice an fresh... as most of the parts are nice an fresh. The car leads a reletively easy life.

I have seen the ball on the end of the clutch arm snap off and wedge the clutch plunger inwards (effectively the same as holding the clutch down) But when you depressed the clutch pedal, from the outside watching the arm move back and forth it looked as if nothing was wrong as the clutch arm roll pin held everything as normal. Making you overlook this area, just have a check

Obviously tricky if you no longer have access to the car but the first thing to check, when jacked up, is that the inner pot joints are going round when the car is in gear and the clutch is out. If not then obviously it's clutch or gearbox.

I can't imagine the gearbox or clutch totally failing without making any nasty sounds. It could be the clutch arm jamming. There is no external return spring fitted. If the clutch was jammed open though wouldn't the pedal go solid after a few presses?

The arm was still moving back and forth as it had snaped the ball off the end of the clutch arm, and jamed the plunger in the flywheel cover  So all looked ok from the outside

Of course! That must have been puzzling at first glance.
