Post PAINTING MY MINI
Sorry its not GTM related but i am sure soe of u guys might know a thign or wo about minis and paint

Right here is the story

I have purchased Kandy apple red paint to do my mini.

I had a guy come over to asses it for a price on painting it.
He told me that the he thinks it might be a bad idea as if there is any imperfections they will sho up when the paint is done etc etc...

BUT isnt the rust/imperfections meant to be sorted when prepping the car?

I mean, the rust will just be stupid things like a wee rust bubble on the door or roof trim etc

So whats the right thing to do, change my paint OR get him to Prep it Properlly...

the guy wants to open his own paint shop, but tbh, if the paint comes off well i will be praising him, but if not there will be storms a brewing...

Depends on your view,

Personally, prepping the car for spraying is after any repair work is completed, i.e welding, dent removal, and rust remedy etc i.e giving a good base.

then paint preperation is sanding, corecting any minor imperfections, such as minor scratches smaller dents that can be filled and may not been seen without flating back a guide coat.

With painting, the finished result is only as good as the preperation, painting is the easy part its all the prep that take the time, skimp at that stage and you will get poor results.

so i guess i am siding with your paint guy

As Neil says, you need three things, preparation, preparation and preparation.

As everyone's said it's all in the prep.
So the answer to your question, regardless of what paint you use, is: Get it prepped properly!

It's all about money/time I suspect, it's one thing to whack some paint on, quite another to get a good finish that will last.

No point in painting a rusty Mini
If there is any rust it will come back through in weeks.
A right waste of expensive candy apple paint......

The issue you have is the paint, Candy Apple Red is notoriously difficult to apply to give a good end result. My local paintshop had a VW Variant in for 2 months to get it perfect before applying numerous coats of paint to it. He was the second paintshop to work on it, the customer giving up with the first as it wasn't up to his standard.

As people say preparation is everything, but it has to be 100% perferct with your choice of colour. With normal colours small imperfections are less likely to be seen. It can be done, as with anything, but cost may be the deceiding factor.
