Post Couple of Quickies - Starter solenoid and Battery cut off
Having spent ages sorting out my cooling system (bluddy nightmare, there's no room  ) I've now started on the wiring and would appreciate answers to a couple of questions, please

- What is the spade terminal on the underside of the (pre engaged) starter solenoid for? As far as I can see I've connected everything up and there's nothing left for it! A suppressor, maybe?

- Which battery cable does the cut off switch go into - live or earth?

Ta :)

The starter motor terminal I'm not sure of but I know its not needed to start the motor as I have no wire on mine, the master switch is always the positive side of the battery, depends on how you have your car wired but the master must disconnect the power to the coil as well as if not you will get ignition run on caused through the power stored from the alternator. I have the master switch connected as my main on/off switch with a feed from this to the fusebox - coil. This means if I hit the master switch it cuts the coil, fuel, actually everything. Make sure you have a direct feed to the starter motor (not from the switch) as you will loose current and being rear engined you already loose alot here.

Thanks Andy :) Sorry to appear thick, but I'm a bit unclear about how can I have a direct feed feed to the starter motor if I fit the switch in that cable? :? I presumed that it was battery-switch-starter but it seems that I've got that wrong?

Make sure that you fit a resistor between earth and the alternator, through the normally closed auxiliary connection on the battery cut off. The alternator doesn't like having all of it's load being removed, if you switch off the isolator when it's running.

The starter cable runs directly from the battery to the starter motor (i.e. not switched) a seperate feed from the battery that the master switch is on powers the rest of the electrics, i.e. fuse block etc. This way when you turn off the master switch you isolate all the engine circuits and the car is imobilised.
