Post steering rack etc
Hi, does the steering rack need fitting to the front subbie please, or can it be fitted to the body? Also the steering column support bracket. Is there a drawing with dims etc as we need to get one made up.
Many thanks
Colin

Hi Colin,
Earlier GTMs and mini's had the rack attached to the body, later cars attached the rack to the subframe to reduce movement and make the steering more precise, if you are building, fix it to the subframe, If nobody comes up with dimensions I will measure up the subframe you supplied with my car, you will need to find or make wedge blocks to fit under the rack and saddle clamps.

Mine was fitted to the front subrame but, as Kano has said, the spacers used were quite complex tapered alloy blocks as the mounting area on the subframe is not flat.

Many thanks for your input gents. Since we found the two alloy blocks in a box of bits at the weekend that is the route we shall be adopting. With regards to the steering column support bracket the dims/dwg would be most helpful John , thank you.

Hi Colin,
I can make you a sketch of the drilled holes in the subframe for the rack saddle bolts, but not the column suport bracket, I dont have one and will have to fabricate along with lots of other bits, including upper suspension arms as you gave me 2 left hand ones   but if I fit the planned coilover shacks its probably a better solution

Hi Colin,
The rack holes in my subframe are not factory drilled and not accurate in their positions, ie approximate at best

John, many thanks for those dims and drawing they will be most helpful. Also found some parts for your coupe in a bucket in the shed last week when I had a clear out. Seat belt supports and upper shock mounts. When are you in the UK next so I can get them to you?

Hi Colin,
I don't expect to be back on leave until April next year, I took all of my leave in one go as I'm relocating my factory, not a small job, If you don't mind hanging onto bits until then I would be most grateful. Iff I have to come back on business it would be nice as I already have more bits waiting to bring back.
