Post Fitting A+ engine into a Coupe
Hi everyone, my first post for a long time. My coupe Q231JCP has always had 'A Series' units but I broke the crankshaft, damaged the block slightly and wore a gouge completely through the gearbox casing on the way home from Newark last year so it has languished in the garage for a fair while. I may need to put an 'A+' unit in it and whilst I am aware that an inertia starter will work if the correct starter ring is fitted, does anyone know of any obstruction issues with the pre engage unit sat on top of the pre engage type of starter motor. Does any part of the framework or chassis obstruct its accomodation or removal from the engine? Also are there any problems of clearance using a Verto type clutch?
Keep busy.
Cheers, Malc Jones (181)

There are two types of verto starter motor. One has the solenoid mounted at 9 o clock and the other the solenoid if at 10 o clock. It's the 10 o clock one that you need if you are going verto. Personally I think pre verto is better though.

I can't remember which is which but one of the starters is from the mini and the other is metro. I have a feeling the 10 o clock one is from the metro, as it needs to clear the radiator.

Now all you've got to decide on is do you take it out of the top, or drop the subframe out of the bottom. :?:  :D

I have a A+ engine in mine with a pre engaged mini starter in mine and it fits JUST, didn't know about the other Metro starter but the engine otherwise will fit fine.

Sounds like you could swap the flywheel, clutch, wok and starter motor over, no need to change clutch slave cylinder then.

Yeah that would make it easier but thats very expensive seeing I only paid 15 euro for mine, and the ad doesn't say that this item is even new?

I'd guess that it is a reconditioned one.

I'm using a modified one, which is about the same as the verto starter, but works with the pre verto ring gear. It's from something like a mitsubishi. Part of my de-lucasing of the electrical system.

But I've also modified my bulkhead, so that there is more room for it. :D

Thanks chaps for all that help. I thought that all pre engage starter motor solenoids were at 12 o'clock and the info about 9 o'clock and 10 o'clock explains all. I now understand that a 9 o'clock fitting could foul on the bulkhead.
